awesome! I was just about to ask this!
I'm also making a underwater fortress. I embarked next to a ocean, and above a aquifer. I went down 2 levels and im going to build a bunch of tunnels and houses and such, then flood it all. And i had built the mayors house on side of the ocean, so that when a wave hits it'll spash at his window, (hes on a small pennisula), and i wanted to install windows to the part that gets hit.

Too much sand or silt and not enough stone.

Find a location with magma as well (or enough trees I guess) and build the fort out of glass blocks!  :D

I was planning to do this..eveuntlly *I have a long list of fort's I want to make*

Couldent you just make an artifical lake?...Or, make it like an underwater Castle *Walls around the entire thing, Seperating the main Ocean and your contained area, thus the only fish in there are ones you specifically catch and release*

Also, that Magma Crakken looks horrifying..make it bigger :P

Would fish still terrify the dwarves?

Unfortunatly, they will still scare the dwarves. When your dwarves can see them they get scared

So, an artifical lake would be one solution because a floodgate and fortifications separating the lake from the ocean is laughably easy to make and very efficient. But that would involve a lot of digging and a lot of aquifery death because expanding it later on isn't really that easy unless you've got a chasm to drain your lake into. But digging your own lake just to drown your fortress in it is extremely dwarfy.
Another solution would be clear glass walls. But you can't build them out of gems and it's just not the same. However, draining the ocean is really hard and involves tons of Fun and 1-FPS-goodness.

One way to avoid dwarves getting scared by things they can see through the windows you could link a lever to some floodgates which block the view from inside like this:
Open       Closed
++║..      ++║..
++╠..      ++╠X.
++░..      ++░X.
++╠..      ++╠X.
ò+║..      ó+║..

Alternatively you could use raising bridges instead of floodgates and then d, b, hide them so they don't ruin the aesthetic.

Using a bridge actually sounds like a cheap and effective alternative.

Floodgate the doorways into the aquarium anyway as a backup for the backup. You know, in case the bridges fail, you can still quarantine the area so it doesn't kill the fort. Plus, you'll have some additional features for the fish to hang out in.

Ooh! Idea! Someone can always make a giant aquarium. Just make little castles and whatnot, build a giant sphere/box out of glass, and fill it with water and fish caught.

...Or was that already used for a contest? Either which way, it could work for collection with aesthetics. Which, BTW, Vis-fortress ought to have an option for transparent water/magma (glassy-transparent magma).

And speaking of magma; why not a magma variant with all sorts of fire critters subbing fish?

Because there aren't many lava critters? And you tend to have to get rid of them quickly before stuff catches on fire?

Mod some in, i made the wonderful mistake of modding in some Magma Fiend guys (basically magma carp) and Magma pipes have suddenly become substantially more dangerous.

magm carp...

ooooh. is it possible to fish them? like, can you make a fishing zone on the edge of a magma pipe, to fish the exotic and deadly magma fish withing?

because that would be extremely awesome.

also, i once made a 25 z level dam on a badlands/desert map, with a 3 story glass window facing my adamantium storage area, and that went fine. only issue was summer would actually boil off the top 3 layers of the dam water, and the entire brook could not fill them up fast enough, so i had to build a tonne of drawbridges to lid it over duing summer.

if there is any tiny insignificant chance of major flooding then you realy realy realy need drainage of some kind. and make sure any control levers are in a tower absurdly high up above whatever point any flooding might reach, its too easy to make one tiny accident and permanently ruin hours and hours of work.

with the ocean this would probably mean lots and lots of doors everywhere to compartmentalize any flooding, with pumps and floodgates to close off and empty out sections of flooded fortress. probably have a wind powered pump tower in some central point with everything draining to its base.

I think fishing is hardcoded for water, i don't know, i've never tried making vermin fish that live in magma.

i've had fishing messages where the magma pipe was empty, so i assume its correct (edit: possible, not correct, leave me alone, i'm sober)
