Windows and water
« on: August 23, 2009, 05:51:33 am »

Hi, long time lurker, first time poster here.

In my next game, I plan on creating a fortress and then submerging it under water. If all goes according to plan, I'll have a nifty little underwater fort with only one narrow exit to the surface.

My question is, can windows hold back water without breaking?

If not, I guess I'll just have to use glass blocks instead. Nothing like having clear and fragile materials being the only thing seperating the dwarves from a cold, watery death.

According to the wiki, yes.

Keep in mind that moving around large volumes of water will kill your frame rate.

Yes, windows will hold back water, I can confirm that.

Beware, some ocean fish have building destroyer tags(Never seen them myself), and they will swim through the windows if given the chance, I think it were the big sharks and whales, but not sure, carp and the like will not destroy windows, but they will scare(And thus interrupt) dwarves that see them through the windows.

One way to get around that would be to run the water through a pump. If desired, smaller fish could be caught with "capture live fish" and tossed in the artificial lake.

Or -- fortifications are considered constructions and let vermin pass through, right? That would let the smaller fish through and keep larger ones out.

Vermin teleport around the map rather than moving from square to square, so fortifications make no difference whatsoever to them.

That would be kind of awesome though. The giant shark starts breaking the glass window in the middle of your dining room, as the dwarves watch in horror. A trickle of water bursts through, then in a flash everything is blown away.

What about a fortification on the outside, and a glass window on the inside? Would that stop the sharks from getting though? Would fish still terrify the dwarves?

To stopping sharks yes, not sure about the terrifying though.

I advise you have floodgates as a backup doorway in case of flood. Usually a good precaution.

Yeah you can't go wrong with the windows as long as you have floodgates to seal in the areas that sea monsters smash through. That actually sounds like the most Fun you could ever happen; a massive shark smashes into your dining room, water roaring in, dwarves running towards the other sections as the floodgates slam down. Families are seperated on opposite sides of floodgates as water drowns them and sharks tear them in two. It sounds completely awesome; so awesome I want to do something like that!

For added effect make the floodgates out of clear class, so the dwarves can watch their family members drown.  :D

Alright, thanks everyone for the replies.

Wouldn't even dream of trying this project in a location with carp. Its one thing to submerge your fort in water, another thing to have those devils floating about. I had a bad feeling about the ocean too, and now that I know sharks and whales can smash through buildings, it seems that was justified.

Either way, I'll get to work on this project and see just how things work out. Thanks again.

So after some checking of the raws, it would appear that neither sharks or whales have the buildingdestroyer tag?

Oh really, hm...

Well, leaves more locations open for me, thanks. Though oceanside locations haven't been very good in my experience. Too much sand or silt and not enough stone.

Actually, I think I had my facts wrong, skeletal and zombie fish of any kind destroy buildings, it's just the big fish that are remembered most.

Oceandraining has other problems though, I can tell a lot about those as I'm currently doing a project that requires me to drain 6z levels of ocean, in a 3x3 embark zone of drainage.
