Or in our underwear.

It was still in the laundry at the time. I was so freaked out until I realized I'd left the catdoor open. Those wacky raptors.

No, I don't have anything worthwhile to add to this conversation.

That's very worthwhile.

For example, I didn't know raptors coveted my underwear.

Friggin frat boy dinosaurs.

You should see them after they get their hands on a keg.

If we're on the topic of dimensions and perceiving them, I'm going to throw something that I read a while back into the mix.

It's actually possible that we're living in a 3+ (excluding time as a dimension) dimensional universe, and it's possible to test it. With a rope.

You basically take a really long rope, travel around a large portion of space with it, and tighten it. Assuming that it doesn't get stuck on a black hole or something (Considering how rare black holes and the like are, not possible), there are two possible outcomes.

1) The rope fully tightens.

and there's the more exciting outcome.

2) The rope stops tightening at some point. It's not stuck, but it stopped tightening. This means that we've just physically experienced another dimension.

The best part is that this concept is extremely easy to understand.

Imagine an ant on a ball. To the ant, who can only travel forward, backward, left, and right, but not up and down (X and Y, but not Z axis) on the ball, the ball (the world) would seem like a 2 dimensional object (infinitely large one).

Now, what if the ant was on a donut-shaped object? It would still appear as a 2 dimensional plane to him, because he can't see the hole in any way. Now, if he carries a rope around the hole in the center and pulled, he would encounter a phenomenon of the rope being stuck on what appears to be nothing.

The whole thing's been proven through math, too. I have no idea how math can prove what I just explained, but apparently it was a pretty big deal that someone pulled it off.

It's interesting, but how do you get rope that long? It must be a devil to find.

I think most of us realized the possibilities of there being many more dimensions than we can perceive is very real. I actually really hope that there's another 7 (at least!) dimensions that we're entirely unaware of.

We're currently ganging up on Armok trying to convince him the notion of perceiving the 4th dimension is craaaazy, if you want to join in :)

(also, I'd never heard of the rope experiment thing, thanks for mentioning it!)

Technically, it could be a really thin thread. It'd only have to stand up to vacuum and the tensile strength of itself since you aren't going to be straining it with any extreme weight.

That said, you're still going to need a hell of a strong rope to pull itself in without breaking when it's multiple lightyears long.

I remember reading that it was 21, somewhere.

I'm probably wrong, though.

Hey guys, bullying isn't cool! It's OK Armok, I totally see where you're coming from. People always act like I'm crazy when I try to convince them that I can see in infrared if I concentrate hard enough.

Here's a good explanation of the dimensions. It seems we have eleven, if you include the zeroth dimension. Ten if you don't.

It's not the best explanation, but it's pretty good.

Wow. So it turns out the one thing that can get Armok riled up is discussion of perceiving 4dimentional space.

Who'da thunk it.
"Christians? Well, I personally believe they are wrong, but many great scientists were Christians. What religion or lack thereof, nor morality, plays much into religion really. Most people simply follow whatever belief their parent and friends had, and all belief systems have fair shares both of monsters, shepple, and geniuses."
"Nazi? Actually, most of the Nazi were "just honest peaple who believed what their leaders said, and a many (most?) of them probably didnt even know what was happening. Several psychological experiment show that most people would have done the same. Even Hitler was probably more insane than evil, in the end."
" 'Ooook AAh Aah'? I personally believe that apes should count as persons, euality and all that, there is no real difference to humans. Here, have this hyperlink."
"You don't believe that monkey should have Equal rights? *sigh* Please read a bit more on that page I linked, if that dosn't change your mind I guess there is nothing I can do abaut it.
By the way, it's APES, not monkeys"
"Heh, sorry I guess. Well, thechnicaly my parents werent maried, and I'm not sure if my mum is a canine but it wouldnt suprise me to much. My mum dont have a basement, but the rest of what you said was spot on!
By the way, how does one sleep WITHOUT touching oneself?"
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DONT BELIVE ME WHEN i SAY i CAN SIMULATE A DETAILEDD UNIVERSE WITH 7 DDIMENTIONS WEREOF TWO TIME!?!?! U SAY SO ONLY BECAUSE U CANT AND I CAN AND IF YOU CANT YOUR A F*KING IDIOT AND U INSULT ME BY SAYING i CANT AND YOURE EVEIL!!!!!!! RAAAGE!!!!"

Seriously thou, I'm getting sick of this flame war, you people are wrong and you either know it, or are firm enought in your position that nothing I say here will change your mind, you have still cited no evidence what so ever, and having read "flatland" does not make you an authority on this.
However, thanceding such thing is simply that I am talking about my own personal (if anecdotal) experience, that it so far seems I know more about the related subjects than anyone else active in this thread, and most importantly that THE ENTIRE THING IS COMPLETELY SUBJECTIVE TO BEGIN WITH. Unless someone has a reveal about being a psychology professor specialising in perception, or Toady comes welding his math Phd, you wont be able to prove anything. And unless I get a bunch of other people who agree with me, or and MRI and a webcam, I wont be able to prove anything either.

With friends like these, who need enemies...

Seeing infrared and seeing 4d is not the same thing, visualizing something is a completely mental process, while seeing infrared would require your eyes to be differently constructed... That said, while my eyes cant see the actual infrared, adding an extra colour channel to something visualised and making it corespond to what infrared would look like is trivial.

As long as we kept dreaming while we were dead, I would be A-OK with dying = sleeping.

What if you died with a chilly underdraft and had nightmares for the rest of eternity?

My dad says falling asleep in extreme temperatures (-15 to 38, or something like that) makes you thrice as likely to have nightmares...

Flying Jovian Raptors!

Yeah, I used to be completely astounded by the idea of the dimensions. I would suck up almost any source that had anything to do with it. In particular I had this course called Joy of Thinking, which wasn't much more than a bunch of mathematical ideas that provoked thought. It was awesome, and one of the two professors had really long hippie hair.

That was a really interesting read (watch?). Thanks for that.
