I was assuming I would die anyway-better eaten by a Satanic Dragon than get bonked over the head with a copper club in a training duel.

I assumed it was a joke and didn't put you in.
And training duels have a surprisingly lower fatality rate than normal ones. For example, in a normal duel, you can surrender, but there's a chance you'll get your head cut off. In a training duel, if you surrender you just leave and get a little less experience. And if you're knocked unconcious, you get spared. And you're given "Training weapons", which decrease attack rolls.
