Facebook is strange
« on: August 21, 2009, 05:04:19 pm »

The Palestinian town I lived in last year has its own facebook page. As far as I can tell, all that page does is vote in random polls that only pertain to people FROM the town. Such as, "who's the better basketball team, Bethlehem YMCA or Arab Orthodox Club?" Or, today,

I guess it's good that they picked "Muhammad" over "money." Even though the town is mostly Christian. Other important questions include

Other weird things facebook does is tell me that some girl I vaguely know from college found a black sheep in her farm and I should adopt it. Huh? And then when I friend some girl I met once at trivia night at the local Ethiopian bar, it starts suggesting all of her friends and telling me to friend them. No, facebook, I will not.

What's your weirdest facebook experience? Any Nigerian scams?

I held out against facebook for all of college, but once I graduated I realized it was the best way to stay in touch with people. This summer my group of friends has been using it to keep everyone informed of plans, which is way easier than having people all call each other on the phone and never know who they should call or who's already been called...not having facebook would mean either people would always have to remember to call me, or they just wouldn't because they're in the habit of just making plans on facebook, or both. It's worth it.

Facebook loathes me.  I seem to overload its awesomeness buffer whenever I try and do something.  It is utterly impossible to maintain a fluid chat with someone over any length of time, as I will repeatedly get disconnected from the chat server.

Notifications will announce their presence to me at least one day after the fact of whatever they're announcing, if they ever show up at all.  And then they will stay alert and active even after I've acknowledged them a couple times.

I was also supplied with a junk "online friends" counter that can't count.  It actually thought it was binary at one point (Friends online: 10 - open the list, and two people show up).

Facebook frequently recommends I also befriend people I have never met before.  Some of them have one friend in common, others just happen to be in the country of Norway.  Or not.

But my weirdest encounter?  Probably having that divorced mother of two start talking to me.  Yes, a real person.  No, I had never met her or any of her acquaintances before in my life.

The fact that I got 50 friends in surprisingly short order. And that only one of them joined Star Pirates like I made the account for. :(

All of my Facebook experiences are completely normal, although I do get the friends counter issue.

They'll suck you in eventually.  They do that with everyone.  It is unfortunately inevitable.  When they do, you might as well get both so you can at least keep in touch with friends of the site you don't prefer.

I never really had a use for social networking sites, as they just seem like forums with extensive profile systems minus the forums.

I love me my forums. Why take them away? I suppose this also stems from a lack of needing an actual customized profile or lengthy private message system, or the lack of the ability to check things regularly.

Still, doesn't mean I don't find some things interesting. I'm sure that black sheep thing is from a crappy farming game Facebook has. Then there was another my sister joined with rather nice Papervision3D graphics. I like the idea of adding semi-multiplayer games to a system with a lot of friends already set up.

I love my friends and family. I don't want any of them to be able to contact at any given time of day in mere milliseconds. I would quickly stop loving them.

How is it that nerds can dislike an efficiency/technology-based communication system!?!

Because it forces them into an environment where they are measured up by the number of "friends" they have, and that forces them to communicate with said "friends"?

Or maybe it's just their appalling privacy regulations.

Now I don't claim to know much of these sites, but while that was rampant on Myspace I don't see quite as much of it here. Still, too many parts of the site want you to send messages to people about random crap you do in site.

I would say that your facebook experience is defined by the quality of your friends.

Cool friends: tagged in a couple photos of that awesome beach trip last saturday.
Weird friends: fifty-thousand notifications about the well-being of their respective minifarmtowns.

I hate all forms of long-distance communication. Phone, MSN, e-mail, telegraph, you name it. Forums are the only exception because I can leave wherever I want to and nobody will notice. Not PMs on forums, though, I hate getting those. I feel obliged to reply, and anything I have to do I quickly start to hate.

It's an insecurity thing I found. Most people I know don't give a shit about how many friends you have on Facebook. Just a few odd ones who add everybody they can find.

I like Facebook. Good way to communicate and keep in touch with people. I have friends all around the world who I've met personally and it's good to be able to keep track of their contact info.
