Hibernating Dwarves?
« on: August 21, 2009, 02:00:16 pm »

All right so I made a separate DF folder for testing some modding/cheating.
All I did was make the dwarves have various life saving aspects.

So I make a map, and embark on an ice field for kicks.
Everything is going well, depot access being built and walls smoothed, beds being made, etc.

And then it all stops. I look. Everyone is asleep. All of them.
So I go grab something to eat with it running. I come back and they are ALL still asleep.

Anyone ever have this problem with vanilla? Or might it just be the modding?
The things added:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Anyone have a guess?

You should ask in the modding section and I have no clue as to what would be making them hibernate.

My very first fortress had this. When the stars align, the auspices are just right and the moon glows blood red all your dwarves will sleep at the same time. It's rare, but it happens.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

I've only had this happen during the first year since the origional seven are pretty much synced initially and will sleep at the same time at first. However, it sounds like they are sleeping much longer than normal.

Well I guess it matters little now.
I left the game running in the background and I pull it back up:
"Your fortress has crumbled to an end"

Seems they slept themselves to death....
WELL! Guess I better not embark on ice again.
Well actually I better test if it will happen again...hmm....

Reclaim or make another fortress in the same area, Try to duplicate it..

This is just...Wierd..It would be intresting to know if it was some kind of fluke or something else

What version are you using?  Did you copy files over a previous version or let it install in a new folder?

I seem to remember this oversleep being a bug in a previous version...

Where the hell is Footkerchief?

Where your dwarves 'sleeping' or 'resting' ?

If the latter, they were injured, probably by the cold. Freezing hurts.
Either it got even colder in winter, or they were already hurt, but didn't go to rest their wounds until you built beds.

They were all sleeping. Not even unconscious or in pain. I'm going Reclaim later and see what happens....

And it was the latest (well, the one before d14. 40d? I think.) copied straight from a vanilla folder and then edited.

Weird.. A sleeping dwarf should have the 'unconscious' state in it's wounds screen

This was a bug in version a iirc.  It's odd that modding would recreate it.

Oi. I would like to jump in into this discussion.

Well, they had the [NOPAIN] attribute, so being in pain is out of question, even if they were injured, amirite? And being injured seems to come easier than you think in freezing biomes... I tried to embark there by myself with unmodded dwarves and was constantly interrupted by announcements of babies bleeding to death. Just by coincident i noticed a guy carrying a baby to a water source (with the courtesy of magma, many thanks!). The baby had medium wounds on every (!) body part possible, including inner organs and nervous system.

So, my guess is that they died of chill wounds, but they didn't care about them, because they didnt feel pain ([NOPAIN]) and can't get unconscious ([NOSTUN]?) If so... ironic, isn't it? The attributes, that were supposed to make them stronger inevitably led to their demise...
