So I saw this new commercial on TV about a new website called Carbonite.

What it advertises is that it offers to privately backup everything on your harddrive online for a yearly fee, so that it'll always be available if something were to happen to your computer.

Seems convenient, but also very schemey, if you get what I'm saying. What do you guys think?

$55 US a year? Ouch.
I'd just buy an external 1 terabyte hard drive for $100 and keep it as long as I need it. To do the backups, I'd just copy everything over to it once in a while.

Heh, ok. Store the backup drive in the fire safe, then.
If you're paranoid about potential disasters happening at your own home, why aren't you concerned about potential disasters happening at their data center? I didn't see anything regarding the facilities their servers are kept at.

Why aren't you concerned with the simple fact that the business could simply go under and take your money and data with it?

To me, it looks like a scheme to lure insecure people... Look at some of their pages.

Encrypted... twice?

That's a lie, plain and simple. It's still taking up cycles when it's 'sleeping'.

That sounds odd, but maybe they're trying to appeal to the kind of people who would lock their money in a safe, which would then be locked in another safe. It's advertising, so I assume that it doesn't really need to make sense.
