Babies are overpowered
« on: August 21, 2009, 03:23:16 am »

It can be just a coincidence, but I have noticed that babies, held by my champion wrestlers, seem to draw all the fire from siegers, giving my champions all the time in the world to attack them before they draw fire themselves.

I wonder if there is something hardcoded that causes siegers to target babies first.
If so, I say babies are overpowered.

Again, it could ofcourse be just a coincidence.

Current baby death rate: 0.66 baby / siege

I'd say the mothers are actively shielding themselves with their babies.

They do. That's why I keep getting pissed when my active military gets messages like...
Urist McWieldAxe cancels Sparring in Barracks: Seeking infant.

Or even better:
Urist McWieldAxe goes into barracks to spar.
Baby McWieldAxe dies 5 seconds later.

I think it had to do with the fact that champions are much better at blocking/dodging bolts than babies are.

While holding a baby, its like getting a free saving throw. The enemy can choose to attack either the baby or the dwarf. If the baby gets hurt then the mother will care for it. I think there's something going on with counterattacks as well since the baby is a part of the mother's inventory (like they attack the baby, the mother gets to counterattack as part of the inventory is being targeted [might only work on grapples...]).

Babies are very effective against wrestlers, as they'll grapple the baby while the parent goes in for an easy kill.

EDIT: Someone with the combat logs turned on for fortress mode could easily see if anything screwy is going on, just pit a mother against a thief/goblin/orc/berserker in your arena until they target the baby first.

I would hardly say babies are 'overpowered' when they need to DIE for your strategy to work. They are certainly useful though. When my enemies are mounted, my dwarves almost always seem to slaughter the horses before the enemies, which is sometimes awesome (when a dwarven crossbowman snipes a horse, throwing the rider to the ground) but sometimes ridiculous (when a swordsdwarf attacks the horse instead of the axe lord on top of it, slashing limbs off the harmless horse while its master flees the map). Still, I would not accuse the horses of being overpowered, as they get slaughtered in the dozens!

babies are just extra armor for your champions. Who cares if they die? Military dwarves almost always have the 'doesn't care about anything anymore' thought which means they probably won't go berserk. One less baby means one less child which means one less useless mouth to feed and take up FPS.

I used to avoid recruiting females. Now I try to recruit married females specifically.

That looks more like a "Don't hurt my baby" than "HYAH! BABY SHIELD!".

But did you do that just recently? That's amazing.

Nice pic!

For some reason however, the baby makes me think 'handgrenade' and 'the pin is missing'

That picture is pure brilliance.

I think it's great how dwarves apparently fight "dirty". A soldier goes sparring with a baby in her hands and her opponent slaps the baby off her hands, *seeking infant*.

I like how the baby is apparantly swaddled with riveted steel.
