It's the "modern" one, and the one my Priest sponsors, since it's generally accepted by that 40 days is way too long to live without food or water.

But the bit about the temptation is directly from the Gospel of Mark.

I'm intezrested in knowing the fasting conventions for Islam and Judaism though.

Well, he was also Jesus, I'm pretty sure he got to do whatever he damn well pleased.

I don't know if Judaism has any fasting tradition, except for maybe on the high holy days...although there is plenty of fasting in the Old Testament, I've never heard of a Jewish tradition of it. I'm sure there is one though, at least as part of some sect.

Christians like to mishmash traditions from other parts of Christianity and sometimes other religions, so they have all different reasons for fasting. I think some of it is borrowed from Catholic traditions. People do it once in a while just to get them more focused or whatever, or to practice discipline, etc.

The one Catholics do during Lent is the "only one full meal a day" one.
That almost sounds like Ramadan, where you have Iftar at sunset, a snack at night and a spartan breakfast at 4am. Honestly, the iftar is the only meal.

I always thought that lent was giving up a foodgroup for two months though...

No, the giving up of a food group starts earlier, at 14. Giving up actual full meals starts at 18. As to the food group given up, it's meat. ;D

Iftar is Arabic for break fast? :P
Oh, the spartan breakfast is feeling good, well. I just did that ... an hour ago? Just 20 minutes until Subh here.

Nope, Ruyoug is Arabic for breakfast, but eating before the Twilight prayer (it is held well before the sun rises) in order to fast is called Iftar.

Faa, Taa (emphatic T) R is the Arabic root for "breakfast" essentially. As in, "break fast." It also applies, IIRC, to regular morning breakfast, just like in English. Then of course also to the meal at dark during Ramadan. Then there's Eid al-Fitr, which I think is the first meal at the end of Ramadan? Same root, anyway.

Never heard of "Ruyoug." Maybe that's from a dialect.

Probably is, I tend to use it more than Faa Taar R, and when I do I pronounce it Foo-toor.

Yeah, Iftar, Fitr, Futur are all from the same root.

How the hell can Arabic has youg?

...
Damn me for only knowing the classical Hijaz script (but everyone is like me too, there is simply no pressure to learn the modern script :|)

Still, I'm reading the Qur'an right now. Romadhon, right?

I guess it's written as youj, but pronounced youg, like mango and english.

And the Hijaz script is pretty much the same as the modern stuff, with only a few that look way different.

This thread has gone off-topic, but it has gone off-topic in such an awesome and informative way that I have no choice but to encourage you guys to go further.

I wish to see calligraphy! I will learn things!

Wait. I still can't write GOOD calligraphy.

OK, normal Hijaz script. After I finishes organising my Comiket acquisition (may take an hour or so)

I'll write somethng as well, but Jude's avatar is caligraphy: it says "In the name of God the Merciful the Forgiving". Granted, it takes a while for you to see the individual letters.

In type it goes like this: بسم الله الرحمان الرحيم

Also you read it right to left. I'll get my caligraphy scanned soon, but I'm just waiting to break my fast in the next half hour.
