I took some Ibuprofen, does it break my fast?
« on: August 20, 2009, 06:04:14 am »

So I am having blood testing soon and I accidently took Ibuprofen.

I have followed my 12 hour fast otherwise.

Does this break my fast?

Ask your doctor.  :-\

At first I thought this was about ramadan, which starts next week IIRC.
My answer would have been: do you eat pepermints during fast?

Ask your doctor.  :-\

I get tested out in a lab not by my doctor.

So I COULD ask... but then Id have to go out, wait in line, then see the specialist/nurse/whoever and say I took it.

First, you shouldn't be taking ibuprofen on an empty stomach.

But to answer your question, it doesn't affect fasting.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Ibuprofen is meant to be taken with meals but most people I see using it take it as if it's Paracetamol.

You could always give your local doc a call.  :)

Worse of all I don't think it has any effect on what I took it for. Namely my legs due to my last Blood test attempt (I can't climb or decend stairs almost at ALL. Though I realise that I probably shouldn't walk on it even with Ibuprofen)

I almost took Chocolate too but I spit it out and washed my mouth out with water. (which is a 4 hour period)

No.
They may find some slightly altered platelets values, but probably nothing at all. Depends on what they are looking for in the test.
You should bring the wrapping with you and have them take a note, just in case.

And don't take it without eating. There's a reason for those little cute plastic-ish capsules.

I thought it was because otherwise it would disolve in your mouth making it rather difficult and disgusting to swallow.

Though I can't eat anything right now unfortunately until I get the tests (in which afterwords, due to the sheer number of samples they need, Ill have to eat)

As a qualified pharmacist, I always recommend using paracetamol for pain relief before anti-inflammatories, due to the reduced side effect profile. But any use of painkillers should be a maximum of 3-5 days unless specified by your GP.

Never had any problem with paracetamol, until I had to take 2 x 1g a day for a week (bad accident, elbow fucked up, long surgery with 3 K-wires installed in the elbow).
First little red-ish blisters on the 3rd day. On 5th day my belly and chest was entirely covered with small red blisters.
But that kind of reaction obviously is totally subjective and I was taking antibiotics at the same time (mainly Augmentin).

So I decided to go with the big guns. Tramadol, some 15-20 drips a day, mostly before physiotherapy.
But I've heard a lot of contrasting opinions about it, from "Great" to "OMG MORPHINE", and everything inbetween.
I've been very satisfied with it. Totally effective and very little side-effects (day-time drowsiness).

You work with this stuff, what do you think about it?

Yeah, me too...

And I think fasting is denying ANY nutrients that enters your body... Is the ibuprofen a nutrient? ANyway, ask the nurse.

I think you did. The 12 hour pre-test period I think means no food, no drugs (medical or otherwise), and no alcohol. But it shouldn't cause problems.

I don't think you can get paracetamol in America. When I was in Israel, my friend who's a nursing major got a bunch and gave it to everybody for just about everything, which was great since we all had strep throat. It was more great because as she said, "you can take one and it will make your pain go away. Or you can take two and leperchauns will start frolicking around in your chest." I took two and then hiked down off some cliffs near the sea of Galilee and by God, I felt like I was in Lord of the Rings.

In the US, Paracetamol is known as acetominophen (Tylenol).
