ADHD? I don't hav-oh look a chicken
« on: August 19, 2009, 04:24:25 pm »

I seem to have great trouble playing a Fortress all the way to this "Hidden Fun Stuff" and the "Dwarf Economy".  My trouble is not starvation, goblins, FPS rate, or even skeletal carp, my problem is boredom.

I have tried really hard to make large fortresses but after so many days of playing Dwarf Fortress dutifully for a few days I fail to get anything out of my fortress in the 50+ dwarf days and I begin to wander and do something else, like work on that model ME109 I also have put off  :(

Then of course I come back to the forums and whine a bunch, then start a new Fortress and the cycle begins anew.

This is the real reason I joined the Bay12 community, does anybody have any tips for making a fortress more interesting?

So Far (from last thread):
Screw Effeciency/Style over Substance (Ironic isn't it?)
Magma  ;D

Try a mod, like the zombie mod, and other mods that have new creatures, finding ways to defend against enemy creatures should keep you busy

I would rather not mod the game, I wouldn't get the satisfaction of "beating" the game if the game had been modified...if you get what I am saying

Make some buildings that are bunkers for your enemy, giving them a fighting chance

I think the suggestion was making the game harder using mods (Orc Mod has Orcs, which are essentially stronger goblins that come in large seiges, for instance)

Eliminate lag, commit genocide, create an army of tame animals, flood the world, etc.

I do.  But others might not.  Remember, this is the forum of the game with the motto:  "losing is fun!"

Which is true.  But winning occasionally is nice as well.

do this:

Flood your entire embark location with magma several (dozen) Zs deep with a small area (somewhat livable to wait out the whole time with survivors), and when you've reached a desired depth of magma in your embark region, visit in Adventure mode and run like hell.

The great molten jello cube of burning hot death. There's always room for some more.

MegaProject: Magma-Tsunami Fuck the World UNLEADED!!! (You though Boatmurdered's was madness...)
AKA
Death by Jell-O / M&M World (a combination; Jell-O blob melts the world, and hardens into a thick candy shell with a big fortress in the shape of a giant "m" in the center.)

Start a megaproject. Smooth and engrave a mountain. Create a mountain out of masonry or obsidian. Flatten a mountain. Something like that.

Or just dig down a nice, wide, straight shaft, pop HFS, and abandon to fuck the world over.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

... Quite a few mods make the game HARDER, not EASIER, making it more of an accomplishment to 'beat' the game.

Also, if you can't get to the dwarven economy within twelve hours of striking the earth, you're doing something very, very wrong.

Suggestions for getting to the dwarven economy: Smooth and engrave EVERYTHING. Have a dining hall with one chair and table for every member of your population. Have a statue garden with a platinum artifact statue as the focal point. Get at least one cook to legendary and then have them make lavish meals. Never miss an opportunity to complete an artifact.

Suggestion for fun: Make an obsidian tower which has a lavaspout on each side every five levels or so, which feeds into a moat of lava. It also should contain everything that you could ever need, so your dwarves have no reason to go outside.

Take my advice, friend, and don't get the economy.  You can deactivate it in DFfolder/data/init/init.txt.  If you do get the economy, do not make coins; they slow things down tremendously (something on the "things to fix" list).  At the moment economy just means non-legendaries have to pay for their rooms and food.  And nobles driving prices up to 200+ %.

That reminds me, my brother gave me an idea for fixing coins the other day . . .

Remember, this is the forum of the game with the motto:  "losing is fun!"

I am in fact having trouble losing without forcing myself to  :o

@Phantom: Bunkers for the enemy? explain, a gobo wouldn't be smart enough to take a postion in a tower to bunker I created, he would (likely) path to the nearest dwarf and attempt to kill him/her

@Winterbrass: 12 hours seems like lots of playing time, that would take me at least a week to do, and besides I normally abandon around the 3 immigration wave, once there are so many dwarfs there is no micromanagement, and DF loses all of its charm

Off-Topic: Is there any way to make engravings not look like crap?  The smoothed walls look awesome, but the engravings remove the ability to distinguish wall from floor and just make the whole fortress look asthetically terrible imo

Make sure you're running 40d13 (or 14 now?) so it progresses faster- it's possible the game will advance ten times as fast, depending on your computer. It saved the game for me, in some situations.

Also, if the majority of mods make the game easier, I'm a friggin' monkey's uncle. 99% are either just pimpin', or meant to make the game more difficult. Get Orcs and Ender Goblins, and zombie hoards and land-carp and acid rain and so on and so forth. Then offset it with awesome weapons and stuff, forcing you to take advantage of the available power content while still being challenged.

12 hours is less than five days for me (and less than two, with how much I've been playing in the past two days). I liked immigrants while I had Dwarf Manager. Then I discovered Dwarf Therapist, and my life became a /lot/ easier. The day I discovered the Manager screen (j -> m) was the day I started learning to love immigrants.

Well, who doesn't like a huge army.

Soapmaker? Recruit.
Animal Trainer? Recruit.
Engraver? Marksdwarf recruit.
Woodworker? Recruit.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.
