Mistakes that turn out for the good.
« on: August 19, 2009, 07:08:20 am »

What were your best mistakes that turned out for the best?

I was storming a goblin fort, and I was chased to the top of the tower: I thought hey, I'm going to die anyway, and walked off the edge of the tower.

I fell 20 Z-levels before landing ON TOP of the demon. It knocked him out cold, so I killed him while I had the chance, because all the goblins were too busy scrambling back down the inside of the tower. I got away when I could.

20-Z levels? Aren't the towers 3-5 stories max?

I thought any more than 10 made bodies explode. :P

I was talking about importing alimunim.
And we were hypothesising about the sexual relations between elves and trees.

5-6 stories is enough.

I must be mistaken. Whatever it was, it seemed very high. :-X

I believe that landing on another creature is good for preventing any and all fall damage.  Demons must be soft and fluffy.  Probably why they burn so well.

But really he's just a softie inside. They all are really. When megabeasts come to your fort you never welcome them inside and give them a hug, do you. You heartless bastards...

could be a cliffside tower. There are a fair number of them if you turn erosion off.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

Yep, that's correct. But as far as I know, falling on a creature stuns both the fallen creature and the fallen-on creature.
Well, you probably just woke up earlier than the demon because of 1337 5K1LLZ.

One thing that should not be done, however, is falling ontop of a tree. Apparently trees are coated in adamantine super glue.

What happens if you fall onto a flying creature?

What happens if you fall onto a flying creature?

Since the flying creature is stunned, it will fall out of the sky and either be injured or (if the distance is far enough) explode on the ground.  As will you.  Rather a spectacular way to go, though, I must say.

What happens if you fall onto a flying creature?
I'm sure it hasn't been tested, as do you have any idea how difficult that would be to set up?
EDIT: Ninja'd by a few seconds.

Incredibly. Maybe dig straight down into HFS, abandon, and come back on adventure mode?

That sounds about right, but won't one of you necessarily land before the other, softening the landing of whoever lands second?

Except that the first one to land will most likely die, meaning that the second one won't have their fall cushioned.  Mind, this is pure speculation, since as jaybud4 noted it would be far too difficult to set it up to occur.

It seems that DF is more about 'Planning that turns into disaster' than 'Mistakes that turn out for the good'.
