I've mined the obsidian from the cast in the first 2 aquifer layers, but I'll probably restart anyways, if just to make it more visually appealing >.>

I dunno what happened, but I was channeling out some space so I could pour water over the magma, and somehow... one of my miners fell in!   >:(

So I'm down to 6 now, but almost through the aquifers! (I hope)  :'(

Savescumming in the first year, back to the start, due to epic, Katrina-level flooding. Even 200 Moruls couldn't pump that mess out.

Let's hope this is the only one. The wildlife gave me no real trouble that run. A beak dog pack showed up with the dwarf caravan and they took care of them for me. The fire critters went down without taking a scratch.

We'll see how fortune smiles the next time.

is it possible to make captured goblins race by opening doors to the outside, then closing them and opening farther ones?

Yeah, fire creatures aren't giving me too much of a problem either. Most resets I've done, one of my dogs kills the fireman easy. Imps set a cat on fire once and it burned down the whole forest though, so yeah...

Reseting again though, this is my first time trying to get through an aquifer and I'm not having much luck. I'm trying casting, since I have the materials and I don't want to accidentally drop my miners while trying to collapse land down onto the aquifer.

I think I'll pick back up tomorrow evening though, I have to get up early...

Night everyone...

that was awsome.

so, i dig the tunnel to the pipe, install a floodgate and open it.

THEN IT BROKE

i then start channeling at the surface to drop a block, and then i find out my channeling destroyed a wall, and the tunnel to the living areas started filling with magma. (i actually dropped a floor, doing nothing)

i quickly tell my carpenter to build a wall and he finished before the magma got there.

AND HE WAS ON THE WRONG SIDE.

so he died and then the beakdogs got in the living quarters when i wasn't looking.

IT WAS BEAUTIFUL

i'll restart tomorrow morning, and pierce the aquifer differentiately

Gah!

7 months down the drain...

Or rather, they would be if i were an actual contestant. As someone who is playing along for fun, I guess i'll just punch through the aquafier properly elsewhere.

It is my understanding that you are allowed to dig / channel the obsidian cast all you wish -- you just can't put stairs/ramps into that cast.

This is pretty much what I meant, but it covers anything that is INTENDED to be an access point that isn't through Aquifer Dirt levels. If you had a staircase to retrieve Obsidian mined above the aquifer z-levels, in part of the Obsidian Cast, it would be fine, since the stairs aren't used to break past the Aquifer.

In the future, I need to provide a Standard DF File for contestant, methinks. Beak Dog Training was something I added into mine, and in my exhaustion I somehow figured it would carry over. I simply added the [PET_EXOTIC] tag to Beak Dogs. You guys can as well if you would like.

My justification for those concerned is that Beak Dogs can be tamed and even used as mounts by Goblins, so the potential for taming is there. It just takes a Dungeon Master, who is a specialist in taming monsters, to do it, and they cannot be trained as War or Hunting variants.

If you'd like to, you can replace [CREATURE:BEAK_DOG] in "creature_standard.txt" of your Raws folder with this. It will allow you to tame them once you have the Dungeon Master:
Code: [Select]
[CREATURE:BEAK_DOG]
[NAME:beak dog:beak dogs:beak dog]
[TILE:'B'][COLOR:4:0:0]
[MODVALUE:2]
[LARGE_ROAMING][FREQUENCY:25]
[POPULATION_NUMBER:10:20]
[CLUSTER_NUMBER:3:7]
[LARGE_PREDATOR][EVIL][MOUNT][MEANDERER][PET_EXOTIC]
[PETVALUE:50]
[GRASSTRAMPLE:0]
[BONECARN]
[PREFSTRING:chatters and clicks]
[PREFSTRING:hunched backs]
[PREFSTRING:large beaks]
[BODY:HUMANOID:2EYES:2EARS:NOSE:2LUNGS:HEART:GUTS:ORGANS:THROAT:NECK:SPINE:BRAIN:MOUTH]
[BODYGLOSS:PAW:CLAW_HAND]
[SIZE:7]
[MAXAGE:10:20]
[ATTACK:MAIN:BYTYPE:MOUTH:bite:bites:1:6:GORE][ATTACKFLAG_CANLATCH]
[CHILD:1][CHILDNAME:beak dog pup:beak dog pups]
[FAT:1]
[ALL_ACTIVE]
[BIOME:MARSH_TEMPERATE_FRESHWATER]
[BIOME:MARSH_TEMPERATE_SALTWATER]
[BIOME:MARSH_TROPICAL_FRESHWATER]
[BIOME:MARSH_TROPICAL_SALTWATER]
[STANDARD_FLESH]
[HOMEOTHERM:10067]
[SWIMS_INNATE][SWIM_SPEED:2500]

P.S. I just noticed: Beak Dogs have a Bipedal, humanoid body. I wonder if they're more like Raptors than Hawk/Dog crossbreeds?

I imagine them as little Swamp Things. They're like balls of decaying vegetation given sentience, who lurk in evil swamps, and strangle Woodcutters and Herbalists who kill plants. They're also [SEVER_ON_BREAK], so in many respects are like the Tree-Hugging Elven equivalent of Iron Men.

But yeah, one of the deciding factors against Undead Swamps is that everyone has seen Skeletal Animals... but there are so many wonderful Evil Creatures to be found in Non_Undead Evil Marshes... some that fly, some that hunt in packs, and others that can strangle dwarves while they pummel them wildly with their fists... and I do believe there are even more, too.

This thread is funny.

I'm not having much trouble so far. I'm in the first summer, but the beak dogs stay far enough away, and the only casualties so far have been two dogs that killed three harpies. This can quickly take a turn for the worse. However, I am Dwarf Fortress Master, so I doubt I'll have too much trouble.

I have wood. I have water. I have magma. I have sand.

I have every single stupid dwarf trick ever imagined available to me.

I am prepared.

That's it exactly. They're oversized raptors.
