Oh wow, I completely forgot about this.

Well, I have two hours tonight, and I can really only promise I'll work on it tonight (I'm horrible with promises like this over the internet). If I remember and actually work on this tomorrow I'll post here. Otherwise don't wait for me.

EDIT: I've decided on a challenge to undertake; use wood only temporarily for everything except beds, and never use stone unless there is absolutely no other way to make the item. Everything else will be made of green glass.

Restarted from beginning (even though I really only just started...) because I didn't really have a plan for anything, but I do now.

EDIT: I nearly just lost my fortress from that damn fireman. Fortunately, I didn't.

EDIT2: And now I just lost a second dwarf from dwarven stupidity, and am teetering on a tantrum spiral.

EDIT3: And now I lost a third dwarf from a tantruming dwarf. This is getting very Fun very fast.

EDIT4: Down to four. I'm going to try to continue with these.

EDIT5: DAMN IT ANOTHER TANTRUM

EDIT6: And now due to not knowing that lava will get stuck in a single tile hole and kill the pumper, I've lost ANOTHER dwarf, causing another tantrum.

SUICIDE CHARGE THE FIRE IMPS

Then everyone died.

I might also ask for someone to provide 3d visualizer shots for forts that don't have any.

I can do this for both Stonesense and VF (honestly, they both just complement the other). Just send me a PM whenever and let me know what forts to grab the saves for and I should have them all posted within a day.

Sigh...
Once again, I must surrender to this map, work and life taking another big stopping step at halting my attempts...

Such High hopes. To actually build a Volcano from natural Obsidian, granted looking over it, I could have made the base smaller and actually have that done by second year (Only started to fill less then a third by Summer before the pipe stopped giving me extra magma to fill with. But I will not be able to finish it...

I will see you all in the next release comp...

Excellent, thank you. From the looks of things, all the fortresses that have been submitted already have 3d visualization screenshots, but if there is any new fortresses that get submitted, I'll happily call upon you to provide.

Just as an update, I've received notice from most of the judges, and several of them have agreed to judge even after all this time, so things should proceed smoothly. I'll still wait for the Jan 25th deadline, in case there are any last minute entries or last minute judging confirmations.

Deadline is just about here! Hopefully those who joined the challenge recently are still planning on submitting their fortresses. The original bout of entries looked great; I'd love to see what else people do with this site.

Time to begin judging. Apologies to the few people (probably no one) who were working on their fortresses but couldn't make it. I heard no requests for an extension, so I will begin the judging immediately.

I'll begin with a list of confirmed judges and confirmed player fortresses. If there is any error in this information please let me know.

Confirmed judges are people who responded yes or vaguely yes-ish answers to my PM regarding their judging status.

Confirmed Judges:
  • Metal Militia
  • Retro
  • Solifuge
  • warhammer651
  • Samus111111

Confirmed Fortresses are those that players have posted links to download files.

Confirmed Fortresses:

From the looks of things, everybody's fortress has 3D screenshots, so that's good news.

rosedrake is sort of a special case. He has a map on the DFMA but no save file. He still completed Muckgrotto, so I'll ask the judges to judge his fortress. I've sent him a PM but he hasn't logged in since November so I won't hold out too much hope of getting his save file.

Judges, the following is the scoring rubric you will use. Since this was Solifuge's competition, we'll use Solifuge's judging criteria from the DFMC 1, with slight changes. Partly because it's a good system, mostly because I don't want to invent a whole new judging system.

Judging begins now! Judges have until the end of February 8th to submit their scores to me via PM. Judges must score all Fortresses, at which point I will total the total scores for each player, and a winner will be determined! Scoring objectives are completely subject to the opinion of judges, and are as follows:

Scoring Objectives:
Judges rate each of the following categories on a 0-5 scale:
  • Terrible (0/5): It doesn't meet expectations at all.
  • Poor (1/5) : Not very good, it needs serious work.
  • Fair (2/5): Moderate, but could use some improvement.
  • Good (3/5): Nice, though it can be made a little better.
  • Great (4/5): Very nice, it's everything it needs to be.
  • Superb (5/5): Amazing, it goes beyond expectations.

Scoring Categories:
Rate the following categories using the above system. The scores in each separate category are multiplied by 5, and awarded as points to the Competitor. Also, the Fortress to score the highest in each category will receive a 10-Point Bonus. In the event of a tie, points will be split. As you rate each category, include why you scored that category as such. A sentence or two will do, but you're welcome to write as much as you'd like!

1) Five  Projects:
On a scale of 0-5, rate each of the projects individually. Does it do something neat? Something new? Is it impressive? Is it awesome? These scores are completely up to you, and measure pure Dwarfyness!

2) Layout:
On a scale of 0-5, rate how efficient, orderly, and functional the Fortress is. Are workshops and stockpiles neatly organized, or are they a sprawling and haphazard? Are the halls clean, or lined with loose stone and ore? Are Dwarves constantly running into other dwarves and their animals in cramped hallways, or are they able to move around quickly to wherever they're going?

3) Beauty:
On a scale of 0-5, rate how pretty the Fortress is. Is the layout impressive, artistic, or imposing? Does it have a detectable theme? Are the halls smoothed and decorated with engravings, or are they bare and sparse? Are their neat architectural bits, or is everything made of squares?

4) Toughness:
On a scale of 0-5, rate how defensible and strong the Fortress is. Is it more like a Tank, or a Piņata? Are there thick walls topped with fortifications and archers? Is it armed to the teeth with traps, or does it make use of highly-trained guards? Is it defended with something special, like trained Giant Eagles or a treacherous trap?

5) Industry:
On a scale of 0-5, rate, rate how industrious the Fortress is. Are there a great variety of crafts being made, or is there a single high-tier focus? Are there many products at all, and are they any good? What resources have been taken advantage of, and in what ways? Is there a Cheese or Lye Maker who is employed in actual cheese/lye making?

6) Creativity:
On a scale of 0-5, rate how original and ingenious the Fortress is. Is something different about the Fortress? Does it do things in new ways, or take advantage of aspects of the map unexpectedly? Are things done with the usual techniques, or with something extraordinary?

Favorite Fortress:
After you have finished scoring, select one Fortress that is your favorite overall. That fortress will receive a 5 Point Bonus.

Final Score:
When all judges have submitted their scores, or on February 1st, Judge's Scores will be totaled by me, Bonus Points will be awarded, and the winner will be determined. Judge Scores will be made public, and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place contestants will receive a Prize of Indefinite Value. Judges who complete their duty will also be awarded a little prize too! :P

That should cover everything. If there's anything I missed, please let me know. Judges, you have one week. At the end of February 1st, 2010, I will expect lots of scores to flood my PM inbox.

You did indeed miss something.
Economy is standard DF, and (as with the last round) you do earn bonus points for the highest Civilization Tier/Noble Level you reach, so it IS actually a benefit.
Though my fort is not in because I'm still working on it. One reason being that I need to wait for my King to show up, though not the only reason.

You bet I did. I decided not to hope and pray that the judges would read my massive post and start judging without any direct prodding from me.

Also, patience. I haven't heard anything about anybody judging, but it's only been two days since I declared judging started. I'll check back in with them on Friday to check on their progress. Or spur them into action, whatever the case may be.

Hmm. Thus Solifuge says, and thus it shall be. What are the city levels and noble tiers anyway?

Outpost
Hamlet
Village
City
Metropolis

And then

Baron
Count
Duke
King

Correct? I guess a point for each one of those accomplished is in order.

Thanks to poor management and a sort of "sadness" spiral,
my fort lost a great deal of it's workers.

Also, they are way way too slow to finish my very very large project on time.

They run over to the project, dig 1-3 tiles, then run off! god dam.

I also haven't built anything else interesting. My dwarves still live in relative squalor.
