Hmm...maybe, maybe not. Summer 106...

Funny, the lower layers didn't evaporate so quickly on me.

Woo! FINALLY complete.

Skip right to the good stuff:

17 Dwarves were kill in the production of this fortress, many more hurt. Overall my fortress went really well but I definitely screwed some stuff up big time. Mostly I got complacent with poor stockpile designations and also didn't plan by obsidian breech well enough. For some reason I thought my initial breech would suffice for what I had planned but I was just wrong. It's not that I misjudged what area I would be able to dig out, I just misjudged how I would be able to clear out everything else later.

Here are some more visualizer screens.

I actually ended up pretty lucky with artifacts after my first 2 failed moods mostly because a large % of my population were masons.

For usable artifacts I have 1 Statue, 1 Hatch cover, 1 Millstone, 2 Doors, A shield, and a Bed.

I'd go into my fort more but at least for now I'm On Break.

That grotto is *awesome*!

I thought about trying to do something based off of the name, but it never occurred to me to make the fort into a real grotto.  It looks amazing.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

Damn, that grotto is awesome. I see someone else saw some massive FPS suckage.

Very, very nice work - doubly so for respecting the site name.

Got all the projects written up (hint: there are a few more than I mentioned), working on fort again. Ugh, sloow.

For the record, I consider myself disqualified for the crashes and lateness it will be completed, but that's just me

Yeah, is it too late to enter the competition?

I mean, originally judging was supposed to start a month ago - if I have another month, I'm there!  :P

I'd say go for it. There was a similarly enormous gap between the deadline and when judging actually occurred for the last round. Hell, I might have to give it another shot for how long this is taking.

Solfuge, if you're alive, I recommend you devise a more efficient strategy for judging. Because this is taking forever.

Like signing up judges when the competitors submit their fortresses, rather than at the same time as the competitors.

I'd say go for it.

I'm not looking at any submissions until I can look at them all at the same time (loosely speaking).  If I had looked at those (few) who had finished before the first deadline when they finished (over a month ago), that might not be fair to others who are being accepted now.

(Of course, the question of whether that's fair is not mine to make... but I have an opinion on it...)

There's a diff between a challenge and a contest.  The former is tossed out, and anyone can show what they can do within the given parameters. There are scores of "challenges" on these boards and the wiki - anyone can try one at any time.  A contest includes "time" as one of those parameters, something this seems to be lacking.

He's not answering, but nor has he throughout this.  Appears he's more interested in setting it up than running it.  He did the former extremely well - the latter almost not at all.  :-\

Wow, looks like my "original" idea for a "Survival Competition" wasn't original at all; you did the same thing with many of the same rules 2 months before me. Nice execution, with the judges etc. Sorry I missed it.

Myth Busted: melting blocks of ore (in iron bin so they don't get cleaned up on season) does not turn them back into smeltable stone. Instead, it turns them into worthless globs.

And, now that I've seen Flarechannels, I suspect that megaprojects do not exist by my rigid definition (1m+materials used).

Now to close browser, as it seems to be the main fps drainer, and get back to work.
