Finally getting the chance to get some quality DF time in so I may still miss the judging but I'll at least be able to show off my fortress at some point anyways. Mid-Summer 106 now and moving along at a much brisker pace than before.

Progress is...progressing. The crashes stopped, thankfully, but the elves don't like my ash habit and warned me.

If they hadn't brought a GDS I'd tell them to take a hike. Duchy achieved. Looks like Mr. Redspine won't be getting up when all else is healed...poor guy.

Dragon caught with a few fire casualties. Again I notice silk's fire resistance.

Generally, we have most of the important renewables: magma, water, sand, wood.
What's missing is flux and bauxite (I think)- the caravan won't bring either, too. Also, cold temperatures for renewable ice.

Those of you still working on your forts, what's your Estimated Time of Completion looking like? I don't mind waiting for a bit yet, as I've got plenty to keep me busy, but I don't want to keep the folks who are already completed waiting forever either. ;)

Estimate a week, so long as I don't get sucked back into pixel-arting.

I'm in my last year which I hope to finish up in the next few days ideally. I can submit at any time now as my fort is at least passable but I'd like to finish out if I can.

Also my count likes Bismuth :(. Not looking forward to the inevitable beatings and jailings.

WEll, leave your bismuthinite unsmelted 'til he calls. There's a reasonable amount, and you can order more.

That's the plan from here on out but I didn't realize it until I had already smelted most of my Bismuth. I ordered more but that's a whole year away. Ah well, I'm really not too worried about it as long as I can jail instead of beat my dwarves it shouldn't slow me down at all.

I had a hard tell identifying bismuthinite in my strip mining, as it's not a pound sign like all the other metals.

Also learned that cinnabar, even though it is a pound sign, isn't an ore.  But still useful for decorations.

Also learned that cinnabar... isn't an ore.

Actually...

You're right, for now.

But I think it's pretty clear that Toady over-plotted for the future. There are several ores, metalic and otherwise, that are simply not (yet?) incorporated into the game...

o Brimstone: sulfur
o Cinnabar: mercury ore
o Cobaltite: cobalt ore (for cobalt glass?)
o Mocrocline: potassium rich
o Pyrolusite: manganese ore
o Realgar: arsenic ore
o Rutile: titanium ore (!)
o Saltpeter: (I forget what this is used for... something... festive...)
o Stibnite: antimony ore

And my favorite teaser...

o Pitchblende... for when "magma" just ain't enough.  8)

And others.

But, for now, sadly, cinnabar and all of these are "just another pretty rock".   :P

I won't be happy until I can power my pump stack from a fully-functional dwarven breeder reactor.

And yes, nuclear reactors are, technically, within the technological period that Toady is sticking with.

This Count is going to tear my fortress apart :(. The 1st Bismuth mandate failed and was immediately followed up with another one. The punishment for his failed mandates are a hammering so down went the dwarf I had been trying to train up in metalsmithing (was at skilled :( ). I can recruit -> Armor or forbid the hammer next time but I dunno this is gonna be rough.
