It's not an aquifer or a pool. It's a genuine underground river. My fort was in a near-sheer cliff above a river valley with a cave river in the mountains above. I found the cave river by digging a ramp in the wrong spot, and now it is slowly flooding down the mountain to flood the map.

I may have to restart just because of the FPS.

Note to self: Having your trade entry hallway aligned with the main hallway of the fortress only leads to gobbos with crossbows shooting down said main hallway.

This is why I constructed an inverted U-bend in my fortress entrance - a line of walls, ramps along each edge, and enough room up above to get through. Doesn't obstruct traffic at all (wagons go right through it), but blocks line of sight nicely.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Magma is successfully flooding the moat. My method works! And it probably would've worked better if I had a little bit more patience. I've got little red ones and twos hopping around in the moat and my miners are putting the final hand on the moat. Now let's hope my magmafall-entrance works... And the pumping array that pumps it all up...

It still isn't fixed that as long as the magma doesn't touch the walkable tile, you can use non-magma-safe materials? Or should I go deconstruct everything and give my glass-blowers a job?

When I quit last night, my fort was growing hungry, with only 4 fish between 7 dwarves.
Urist McJesus came to mind...

EDIT

Thanks, EvilTwin, I wasn't sure. And things are not well in Dodókzolak -Claspedblizzards- The moat isn't filling itself fast enough, It's drying up as we speak. So I've widened the input and am temporarily stopping the expansion of my moat. And I've got an annoying Tax Collecter and Duke. The first likes HFS metal and the latter black bronze. I have neither nor can I produce any of it.

I dont think he meant it as a joke...

Anyways, still scrambling to make the king royal chambers. My emergency strand extractor is, as expected, taking half-seasons to extract the adamantine...

Probably a typo. You know, 'fatal'?

I'm talking about the bronze colossus. It's supposed to be made entirely of bronze.
But really he's just a softie inside. They all are really. When megabeasts come to your fort you never welcome them inside and give them a hug, do you. You heartless bastards...

 :D

i knew such a typo would happen one day. i knew it.
(yes i wanted it to mean fatal, not fetal... ummmm, english isnt my mothertongue...

anyway, back to the thread...
in the third year of my fortress a goblin ambush made it, by the dumbness of some dwarves, into my main corridor. they had crossbows. they used them.
after somehow managing to get two dabbling axedwarves to chop off some legs and arms - which happened not before about ten dwarves had already died in the rain of bolts - i was able to watch a beautiful tantrum spiral. i have never had that before because of over-secured forts, so i was quite surprised about the extents. i have capped my population to 30, which is enough for me to complete most things as i fast as i want it, but it might have been cleverer to double that.
now only 15 dwarves are left alive, and from those i might be able to actually use about 4 or 5.
hopelessness

EDIT: oh yeah, my second brewer is going doooown. raving around stark, and mad.

i think i will just go reclaim.

It was a bit too late to do that for this fortress, so I just propped in a wall a couple spaces in front of the entry. At least the gobbos don't have straight line of fire, though now my dorfs have to route out around it.

Ah, well, they have nothing to do outside, anyway.

Bugger, the moat is drying up... Time to route a murky pool to make an obsidian dam. Hopefully this will make for a more effective filling of the moat.

EDIT
Rerouting a stationary thing makes no sense. Also, my weaponsmith produced a tin mace during a possession.

AFAIK you can change the popcap at any time.
Dwarves will happily live in a charnelhouse as long as it is clear of miasma.
