Well, I decided to start a few fort, low starting equipment and different skills.

14x turtle
1x plump helmet
4xIron

4xFlux Stone
3xCopper
1xAnvil
1x leather
A little wood
2x dogs, 1x cat
First order of business, use the copper to set up a furnace, smelter, and forge. Make some charcoal, then steel, then a steel battle axe and pick - wood and stone and shelter.
Designate mining and treecutting(odd looking trees), more wood and charcoal and steel and a leatherworkers is set up, a quiver made and the furnaces and forge rebuilt inside with stone, as a stack of copper bolts are forged - my "military" is activated and stood down.
There's a pond nearby, and the climate warm, so plans are made to save it, and a cistern dug - 45 tiles of +6/7 water safe, so I figure I'll send out a fisherdwarf, move my remaining supplies inside, and build a surface farm, then gather some surface plants to sustain me - my military can protect me for now, and I can move the farm somewhere protected soon enough.
A fisherdwarf is interrupted by a ZOMBIE!... groundhog. How threatening, Military is dispatched, and so is the rodent. Bone bolts will come later, but this foreshadows...
The trees are dead, that's why they looked odd. And so are the plants. And undead wildlife.
Supplies dwindling, two seeds from my only plump helmet, and nothing on the map to eat(and I guess that means the trees are non-renewable, too) - that pond is my only hope! Fishing a priority, I quickly dig out an underground farm to plant my only two seeds, build a masons and doors to secure the fort, then dig a tunnel to the cistern and floor over it's stairway.
When I quit last night, my fort was growing hungry, with only 4 fish between 7 dwarves. Fortunately, the cat proven there's plenty of vermin should it come to that, but it could be close.
