My magma moat (yaay alliterations!) wasn't filling properly, and in a moment of hubris, I slightly expanded the dam, so it could hold more. And I accidentally made a diagonal opening. Now one of my miners is racing the magma to build a wall. Looks like he's going to win too. Now let's hope that dam #2 works out fine and I'll be happy. In the meantime, I've expanded the glass-blowing business, expanded my noble/legendary/starting 7 catacombs and made my duke unhappy by ignoring his demand for black bronze items. My engravers are smoothing the prepared well area/food/drinks-stockpile and hallways around the bedrooms. My masons are building basalt blocks non-stop to build me my tower(s). And the rest of the fortress is hauling excess stone out of the newly expanded catacombs or hauling wood for my carpenter to make into barrels and bins. And maybe a bed or two.

Mmm, a champion played baseball, and I learned that snatchers will steal baby animals.

Time to start anew.

The mayor got caught in a cave in (well, it was him who was removing the piece of floor that caused the cave in, but let's not quibble about details :P). Result: Broken hip, right leg broken in two different places. I guess he's not going to be doing much mayoring in the foreseeable future.

Bored, I installed the Orcs mod.  I began a new fort.  In preparations for the oncoming onslaught, two of my seven dwarves began sparring immediately.  When the migrants came in the fall, I drafted six more.  Each was given a wooden shield; two had leather armor.  They wrestled.

During the winter, the orcs arrived.  I holed up, and the sparring continued.  As each wrestler reached legendary status, I gave them an obsidian sword.  By late winter, I had seven legendary wrestlers/proficient swordsdwarves (one of them died during the sparring).

I unlocked the entrance and sent the seven legendary dwarves to meet the foe on the field of battle -- around ten orcs, I believe.

The foe was destroyed, at the cost of two military dwarves, and another one missing a leg.

Spring arrives, and brings with it another orc siege -- about ~20 orcs now.  My one-legged dwarf is still outside, and no one is dragging him into a bed.  I give him as long as possible, but as the orcs approach the fort, I lock the entrance and watch him get slaughtered.

Then I find that orcs can break down doors.  They flood into my fort.  The remaining four military dwarves give their lives to rout the invaders.  After the carnage is done, I have five dwarves remaining of the 16 who started the winter.  One of them goes berserk and kills two more before dying himself.  Two dwarves remain from the massacre, surveying the bloody interior of their home.

I'm loving it.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

Lodgings have been set, I've got 16 dwarves, all active except one hunter that mysteriously got his leg and upper body torn up.

A trade caravan from a modded water breathing civ appears at a fortress near a lake.  One of the pack animal merchants decides to travel through the lake instead of around it.

I find him with his brain turned off 3 z levels underwater in the middle of the lake next to a drowned mule corpse.

Just a few hours ago:

Rebuilding the waterwheels the hydra destroyed, hydra was captured for later use in zoo.
Building some more pumps.

Tomorrow: Placing the last pumps of this z level, and then draining a 3x3 embark size area in the middle of the ocean, and then starting on the second z level of water below it. (6z levels of ocean, going to take a lot of power)

What kind of statues are your masons making, that you think they have "maximum exposure"?

Alright, made a new world.  It's horribly hot, dry, and highly volcanic.  And there's no elves.  NO ELVES.  I don't care what I had to do to cause that, it's PERFECT.

Embark site is hot, heavily forested, and has two layers of aquifers.  This is going to be Fun. :P

EDIT: ... ... ... The place is called "Buriedlabored".  This is going to go well.  :-\

I'm talking about the bronze colossus. It's supposed to be made entirely of bronze.
But really he's just a softie inside. They all are really. When megabeasts come to your fort you never welcome them inside and give them a hug, do you. You heartless bastards...

Goblin siege, my goblin traps (square constructions filled with stone traps and kittens, abusing goblin hatred of all things cuddly) wiped out the southern and western groups, leaving the large groups from the north and northeast, which met up and formed a giant goblin horde. Opened the door to my cistern , they thought they could get in the fort through the escape stairway but I also opened some floodgates to shunt the water from a few less than necessary pools to flood it to 7/7 as they entered. Sealed it off, good thing I have a secondary cistern because this one is about to get tainted.

A small cluster of goblins ran, launched ballista down predictable one tile wide escape path, three goblins down and xp for siege operator, VICTORY! Also uncovered a bituminous coal vein while strip mining the last chalk lair I have, probably the last one I'll find in this fort.

Next plan is to start constructing a large watchtower over my bigger cistern complex, going to pump some water up in it and make a level devoted to a retirement center for my Dwarven Veteran's Association, gotta keep the royal guard healthy. Will also install a recruit barracks and an archery range below the top, which will be converted into my primary ammo stockpile. After this is set up the barracks areas in my main fort are going to become high income housing, storage space, dining areas, and shops. Ideally the tower will let my military dwarves be almost entirely self sufficient, with my militiamen haulers bringing food and other supplies during peacetime.

Got bored, so I installed the Legendary Lands mod. Before I quit for the night, I had just finished the wall, tapped the magma pipe, and dug into a magnetite vein in a chalk layer. I've also uncovered two veins of lignite, so soon I'll start on making steel armor and trap weapons. In the meantime, I've continued crafting brass goblets since LL amps up the value of metalcrafting (he should really increase the value of ores too, I brought over 45 sphalerite and malachite with me). The only bad thing about this map is the magma is exposed from the surface. Once I get some migrants I'll wall it in, then work on setting up some traps around the entrance. I'm not sure, but I suspect that sieges will come earlier in LL than they do in vanilla.

Edit: Got the traps up just in time. Apparently two different vermin races (LL seems to have at least 4 with the thief tag) sieged me. None of my dwarves were hurt, but I lost several dogs and now I need to set up a death pit to deal with what the cage traps brought in. Oh well.

Collapsed part of the UG river to make it flow through a new passageway - which includes my power generation plant. The rock was not the only thing that plumetted - it took my FPS with it. DF is now running at 2 FPS  :(
