I decided that it's time to go insane with my random vision's of way's to make a fort.

As such, my new-age kobolds delved into mining and masonry, and a collapse of a rather large area of ground in order to start building the fort from 5 levels down.

In the duststorm, the miner who channeled the last tile, was sucked in and died on impact. People were unhappy, but soldiered on.

Autumn comes, and the walls on the top of the ground are almost ready, when the orcs arrive.

All other orders were put on halt, and the food stored inside and orders to prepare the fort to be sealed and protected from invasion were given.

This didn't stop my carpenter from taking a nap on a bridge. I gave him a little time, in case he would wake up, but he didn't, and there was no other option.

The bridge underneath vanished, and he fell five levels down, although unlike the miner before, he survived. A few broken bones, but survived. He even managed to get over being miserable, and went content after the remaining kobolds managed to build some sort of housing for themselves, and most important, for the guy to rest in.

Season passes, the fort gets a little bit of building done with the remaining four builders(one of the miners was outside and got caught by the orcs when they arrived, something that I only now mention because his passing didn't impact the remaining kobold's mood much), and the sieging goes away, bored.

So the bridge goes back up, some stuff is being moved, when the orcs suddenly come back. With twice as many units as before. I guess they thought they could accomplish something with that.

This time it is my stonecrafter, and expedition leader, who is on the bridge, when I notice that a large group of orcs is running right at the open gates. There was only one thing to do.

To sum it up, my carpenter is the only one who has survived falling into the city floor. This is also a map with "scarce trees". Which meant that when I chopped all the trees upon embark, I got 12 logs.

This should be an entertaining experience.

Struck Adamantine with my first new fort in a month, Mid-Spring. Probably should have stopped the exploratory mines after finding the magma-pipe (right next to the Adamantine, ironically).

Now scrambling to produce weapon racks, cabinets and such. At least the Adamantine will bump up the King's stuff to royal.

I just assassanated a human merchant prince. It toook me 3 tries. The first time i lock him in a room and flood it then he teleports out 2nd time i raise the bridge hes on and he goes flying in the river then he climbs out. So I lock him in a room with a goblin maceman who the merchant then beats to death. So i finally just unleash a gobbo swordmaster on him and that finished him

Then i began construction on my goblin toilet project and right then i get a siege of 48 goblins. Luckily there was only 1 bowman but he was a local civ leader. Everybody made it inside except a swordmaster who got in a fight with a swordmaster/local civ leader and lost. So im getting ready to fight they are across the river and cant get me. Then of course right then The river FREEZES and the goblins charge. All that is in between them and my fort is two elite marksdwarves who get into a shootout with the legendary bowgoblin immidietly one of the dwarves dies but then the other shoots out both of the goblins eyes out and killes 11 other goblins. The goblins then reatreated and the dwarf was elected mayor

Cobbling together bedrooms for the inevitable next migrant wave.  Plus keeping an eye on a speardwarf that stayed behind when the last caravan left, just in case he starts causing trouble... ooop, never mind, he just left.

Lost a fortress guard to a training accident against a hammerdwarf... hastily making some plate armour for the rest of them, even though I'm still not giving them weapons.  I've also made a nice, well-trapped hoard for my artifacts, although most of them aren't the particularly inspiring sort (An artifact quern?  Whatever spirit possessed that dwarf isn't the most exciting of supernatural entities :P ).

EDIT:  And the guard's husband is bringing their baby water.  Awww.  That just makes me feel bad about the whole thing... I should write a story about this fort sometime, actually...

Waiting for the goblins to come. I've begun acclimating my champion squads to the surface by making them learn how to swim in a big-ass lake I just constructed.

Continuing construction of my doom-tower. Wondering how siege weapons work- considering building a new tower out somewhere to put a catapult on top of, just for a couple test-fires.

The magma flow has begun! My second successful magma complex is up and running, it took an extra 6 months to construct because I discovered copper leading away from my complex, and then a HUGE iron vein running in yet another direction.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

My current Glass Fortress is doing quite well. Plenty of food and booze, everybody's got a room, nearly all the dwarves keep themselves busy with useful endeavours, etc.

I'm also fairly well protected, with a magma moat and wall surrounding my entire fortress, and the entrance locked up with a good amount of weapon traps (full of glass serrated discs of course) and a few cage traps. There's also a bridge but I don't tend to raise it since my 13 champion dwarves can handle whatever manages to crawl through my weapon traps.

There is one little problem I've had in the past though. Usually whenever there was a siege, some idiot hauler dwarf would decide that (narrow raccoon leather cloak) that's just outside of my defence perimeter really should be brought to the finished goods stockpile near my jeweller's workshop. And then when it walks into a horde of goblin macemen said useless hauler usually decides that running away from the fortress is a better idea than running back inside, over the weapon traps that would chop up any goblin that might come after him.

This also meant that I'd usually have to send in that squad of champions prematurely - instead of being there to clean up after the traps got their share, I'd have to send the squad outside to deal with the menace first hand. Of course they can handle it all with ease, but I didn't build those traps just for aesthetics; When I build traps I want to see them 'used'.

tl;dr: I have a lot of traps but usually they're not used because I have to go save the moron that goes outside to gather socks during sieges.

Anyway, I just got the biggest siege I've had yet - I counted 78 goblins and 1 human hammer(?)lord. It seemed like it would be a fun fight. I thought I had fixed the problem of dwarves running outside to gather things by making some more stockpiles and moving everything inside.
I stationed my champions just past the entrance, ordered my marksdwarves into place, and waiting for the goblins to walk into my meat mincers.

And then I saw my legendary organizer/appraiser/record keeper walk into the goblins to collect the one piece of clothing I had apparently missed. Shit sucks, but oh well, it doesn't take all that long to train up those skills, really. The dwarf died a moron's death and all was well. Until 15 or so other dwarves ran to the entrance to recover the ex-Administrator's ex-possessions. Turns out the claiming options were turned on. My bad, I admit. However...

By this time, I'd sent my champions into battle, but they just wouldn't move, choosing instead to chill in the guard tower overlooking my entrance. I lost 9 more dwarves to the goblin siege (including the dungeon master, hammerer and tax collector) before I ordered my marksdwarves up to the tower in order to pick off what they could (why I didn't do that earlier - no idea).

Then, when the goblin army finally decided to flee, my champions rushed downstairs to the now deserted battleslaughterfield. :-\

I got some of it on tape; Most of it is not very interesting (not a lot of carnage to be seen because I'm scrolling around so hectically) but you can see the - late - arrival of the cavalry at the end and laugh at what will probably be the catalyst to my fortress's spiralling demise. ::)

Oh and wouldn't you know it, one minute after my trader dies, the dwarven caravan comes rolling onto my site. :'(

Analyzing the video I can only conclude that most of the issues were caused because of the way the Squad interface works. If you don't lock the view to the squad you mean to order around, you'll end up ordering the champions into the tower and the marksdwarves by the entrance.. As can be seen in the video, mymarksdwarves being ordered to move to the bridge...  >:( Fuck.

recently started a new fort in a completely clean world. made the firt digging designations when i figured i wanted this to be something bigger than only another megaconstruction on an else entirely vast place, so i decided to save, quit the game and start writing, and hell, it's gonna be a lengthy story from what i think about right now. in cinema september 2009...

in an unbelievable foresight i called the fortress "Godlytemple Of Blood" on embark, so it's gonna be an interesting megaconstruction-adventurer-twist...
i hope my writing skill goes up a bit while scrolling through the memories of an yet unnamed adventurer...

oh yes, there will be blood
