Oh God, Seattle and the Adams Brothers are in peril!
« on: August 17, 2009, 04:16:25 am »

Peril I say!  Peril most dire!

Seismologists warn of possible super-huge earthquake right under the Tarn Household!

I hope you guys, and anyone else living in the area, have plans for this kind of thing.

We shall plant nukes inside the fault line and cause it to not quake.

There is no flaw in this plan.

Tarn Adams: Ah! Finally! Dwarf Fortress 1.0 is finished! Now all I have to do is upload it to the internet and my patient, loyal fans will have what they've been waiting for all these years!

*Earthquake*

Tarn Adams: OH NO! The earth is opening up! NO! My computer with all my years of hard work has fallen into a fissure! Now all my work belongs to the Morlocks. Brother!

Zachary Adams: What is it oh woeful brother of mine?

Tarn Adams: We will venture forth into the earth and defeat the Morlocks and get my harddrive back, for GREAT JUSTICE!

If that's the worst thing, I'd pay in blood (someone elses of course) to see the best.

Once tried to conquer Earth, and succeeded! Too bad it got really, really boring, really, really fast.

One day, we shall all look back on this, and laugh. Sorry about the face, by the way, and the legs, and the eyes, and the arms. In fact, sorry 'bout the whole body.

Now I feel tempted to write this long, encompassing fan fiction named "Toady Fights the Morlocks" just for the humor value involved.

Also, Earthquake, that's important too.

Make sure you include the part where we all swear our allegiance, arms, and lives to the name Adams and descend into the Earth with them, only to be slaughtered by foul creatures from the Hollow Core.

This is all hypothetical, of course?

Obviously, DF 1.0 would be able to transend mere machinery and travel the world, a flying string of code, bringing joy to those with computers powerful enough to reshape the world with a click of the mouse, because I can't think of any other computer that could run it.

Okay then. We'll need to find the fault line and get some duct tape . . .

Okay, It's the Juan de Fuca plate going beneath the North American plate, so Island County (Washington) is gonna be flooded good.

No! Toady calls in the legion of indoctrinated fans who will risk heaven and hell to see 1.0. When they finally reach the computer, a miniature civilization has begun around it, a whole society were each person is represented by a dwarf and does what the game err God tells them to do.

Quote
What's unique about the deep tremors, which occur in an area stretching roughly from Olympia, Wash., to Canada's Vancouver Island, is that they reappear about every 15 months.

Bolded for where I live. They've been saying we're overdue for this quake for decades, though, at least over here. I fail to see what the "new data" is, unless it's that it's likely to be centered directly under Seattle instead of slightly off coast as they'd previously thought (which is sort of how it's worded). Even though, either way, Seattle would be super fucked if it happened.

I bring good news!  Today I had the opportunity to have a brief discussion with Steve Malone (one of the seismologists quoted in the article), and he seemed relatively unconcerned with the pending destruction of the city.  Possibly because this "news" is really really old, and all of this is media hype.  Although most of us probably had that figured.

I didn't read the article, but I assume they're talking about the Cascadia Subduction Zone.

They've been talking about "the big one" around here since I was a kid.  I've been through a few comparatively minor earthquakes (The first was during my 10th birthday party - that was fun)  I'm not really afraid of it.  It's been ~300 years since the last one and they return every 300-600 years, so one might come in my lifetime.

A 100 foot tall Tsumani sounds intimidating until you realize that you live on top of a ~450 foot tall hill
