Toady could save any potential damage to his magnum opus by simply backing up all his work on some cd's, and then storing them in a bank's safety deposit box someplace across state lines, far away from the fault line. The only problem with this idea would be that he'd need to repeat this every so often in order for his data to remain up-to-date.

He's said before that he has physical backups in remote locations.

Seriously?

Though I wouldn't expect any more, given what we know of him.

This may be a stupid question, but there ARE regular backups of the code to other machines, preferably occasional off-site backups as well, right?

Yeah, frequent backups, located here and there.

I think he said elsewhere that he shouldn't lose more than a week (of work) even if his apartment burns down or whatever.  But yeah, that might have changed depending on how often he gets to move backups to other locations.

Man, living in Michigan sucks even more now. We never get hit by natural disasters! Ever! It's so boring!

A shudder every now and then would spice things up, but we don't get any...
I know your pain buddy. The general DC and Maryland area gets nothing. No tectonic plates, a column of rising hot air drives away all storms and all the famous people go to New York.
Actually, you guys had that heavy snow February '08 (or at least in Virginia we did) where school was cancelled for a while. It was pretty awesome, but I may have a biased opinion as it was probably only the fifth time I've seen snow, and that was the most I've seen in a while.

We (Michigan) actually had a tornado not to long ago, and there are the occasional blizzards.

PSHT! Those tornados never hurt anything. It's like "OH! A Tornado! We'd best flee for our lives!" and then we flee, and then we come back only to find that the tornado took one look at us and decided to just flounder about in the stratosphere than come down and actually hurt someone.

The blizzards are the only things actually coming close to being any fun. They don't come around as often as I'd like, but when they do, they throw snow down with such density that you can't see 5 ft in front of you. The roads are covered in snow despite it constantly being moved out of the way, and along with the snow, so do granules of ice so sharp and whirling about so quickly that exposed skin will be left raw for days afterward.

It's unfortunate that the very worst that they do is occasionally down a power line or send some trucker off the road. Otherwise all they do is provide business for the THRONGS Of snow sweepers, snow shovellers, snow throwers, and snow mobile salesman.

Even nature deems it necesary to provide economic stimulous.

Down in the UAE, the worst you can get are flash floods and earthquakes, which seem to happen whenever we are away. If a flash flood happens on a school day, then you get a rainday, or so my older sister tells me. We had snow once too.

Here in England, we're essentially disaster proof. Our climate is just too temperate to really cause any damage apart from the occasional flood. On top of that, very few poisonous animals and few large dangerous animals.

Until England get struck with the EUROPE COLDING and merge with Europe proper.

Hahaha
