Incidentally, if you've been learning Japanese for more than six months and using it frequently since, then you can probably do it forwards and backwards far faster than the English alphabet. It's just an easier to remember language, since it follows a simpler pattern with far fewer exceptions.

Sadly, this is an actual fact.  I memorized the letter positioning on a keyboard before learning the "proper" recitation of the alphabet.

I wish I learned qwerty before abc. Nowadays, I know it better. When there's a keyboard (simulated or not) that uses the abc pattern, I have no clue where anything is. Makes texting a helluva lot harder.

Keyboards are supposed to be designed to fit common letter patterns. Letters with large usage are easier to access.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that's not true of the QWERTY layout. Wasn't it actually developed to slow down typists on early typewriters so the machine wouldn't jam?

I heard that the American QWERTY and British QWERTY are slightly different. I'm not sure of the differences though.

I think it was intended to place often used letters apart so that they wouldn't jam as often, but not to slow typists. Putting common letters in easier places would have been a secondary goal.

To prevent it from jamming is why they wanted to slow typists!

Anyway, supposedly a dvorak keyboard is more efficient because of the common letter thing.
