....just lounging around in the dining hall? It seems I can't appoint them to champions as pets. I don't have much use for them as pets as much as siege assists. Any ideas?

Mod them as trainable
Set cages outside and pull the lever
Screw them, Get Magma

Chain them up outside.

Build a restraint, ether a rope or a chain, where you're going to be fighting. Assign whatever animal you want there (just make sure they're tame).

Add the [trAINABLE] token to them and you'll be able to train them as war jaguars. My current fortress has war dogs, war cougars, war jaguars and war black bears. [trAINABLE] is a fun little token to apply liberally :D

Addendum: I'd suggest getting a breeding pair (or five) of jaguars and chain them up somewhere safe. It's a big cat, but it's not immortal so it's nice to have some spares

Make a small 5x5 room with a wall in the middle leaving one single passable tile. Place cages in the four corners of the room, stuff them packfull of giant jaguars, connect them to a pressure plate placed in the single passable tile.

Then make the level above this room a reservoire and flood the entire fortress. With water, because screw that magma stuff, we need innovation.

I like to build a courtyard, which can be sealed at either end. And/or a Trade Depot Airlock.

Trap a seige in here, along with a cage containing your critters(lever or pressure plate), and release them to butcher your enemies.

If you want to be fancy, you can put pressure plates across your enterence/the aproach thereto, with the cage(s) further out, so that, once released, the invaders are between the kitties and the meeting area they'll inevitibly run for.

Alternativly, designate a meeting area where you want the animals to intercept the invaders, making sure it's outside, and order the dwarves to stay inside. I think that should do it.

Note though that right now the game doesn't have very good controls for war animals-I don't know how exactly it works, but when assigning war animals to a dwarf, there's no option to assign a specific type.

Add the [trAINABLE] token to them and you'll be able to train them as war jaguars. My current fortress has war dogs, war cougars, war jaguars and war black bears. [trAINABLE] is a fun little token to apply liberally :D

I can trump that. One of my fortresses has war monkeys. War jaguars might be dangerous, but war rhesus macaques make you wish you'd never been born.

How would you like to get torn to pieces by fifty of those?

This is a Dwarven corpse. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encircled with bands of pathetic and menaces with spikes of fail.

I think a few dwarves with high level in mobster and equipped with SMGs will kill those monkeys.

It seems I can't appoint them to champions as pets.

Yah.

3 choices:

1) Train more military, assign before champion level, enjoy increased military.

2) Use as guard animals

3) Use as fire-and-forget attack animals (as suggested above) - you will lose them in combat this way.

As in tossing dwarfs towards the goblins?
