Zork is kinda fun.
« on: August 16, 2009, 08:16:13 pm »

I got Zork off of Abandonia (I'm pretty sure it's not piracy). In my first 20 minutes, I managed to kill myself with a sword (didn't know command would work, with hands it just says something funny), jump off the grand canyon (see previous) and get killed by jumping in a kitchen. Not sure how. I also ate a lunch.

Anyone else tried this?

The classic Zork trilogy is completely freeware. You needn't feel any shame.

You can download them directly from Activision, also.

Zork is great, though I find the puzzles nigh-impossible. I HIGHLY recommend getting A Mind Forever Voyaging, which is arguably Infocom's greatest and the best interactive fiction ever made IMO.

I also recommend using Windows Frotz to run z-code games like Zork instead of DOSBox. Looks much nicer / more modern. And the font and colors are customizable and whatnot.

Don't forget to HELLO SAILOR!

That was the point I knew I loved William Crowther's Adventure.

>kill dragon

With what? Your bare hands?

>yes

Congratulations! You killed a dragon with your bare hands!

win.

That's also freeware, so nab it Sensei.

There's an awesome interactive fiction community out there. I've actually written an IF myself using Inform 7 based on the website The Party (www.t3hparty.org).

Most text-adventures have insane puzzles.  That's what makes them so long.  Also, don't forget that if you lose something in your inventory and nothing beneficial happens.  RESTORE.

Yes. If you want puzzles, IF is your game genre. Point-and-click adventures are nothing compared to some puzzlefest IFs.

By the way, never eat anything unless you KNOW you have to, examine everything, and SAVE OFTEN and keep MANY DIFFERENT SAVE FILES.

BTW Sensei, if you eat the garlic you've made the game unwinnable.

Early IF games are hugely frustrating because it's easy to put the game in an unwinnable state.  It's like a maze with dead ends, except the dead ends are pits full of spikes, and you don't know you've even fallen into one until a couple hours later.  However, that said--being able to say "Yeah I beat the original Zork" is enough to get into the cool kids' club pretty much anywhere.

Every real computer gamer who was playing games in that era has a box or desk drawer full of maps.  Maybe hand-drawn...maybe graphed in a primitive CAD program...but yeah, hand-mapping it is important.

I am doing the same in my King's Quest I Let's Play.  (I need to update that)

Hand-drawn maps and no guides FTW.
