Clear glass counts as a tree product to Elves?
« on: August 16, 2009, 06:49:30 pm »

The title should be pretty self explanatory.

I just attempted to buy a few cartloads of wood from the elves using an assortment of *«*large clear glass gem*»*. They're all clear glass gems, decorated with clear/green glass.

And they had the audacity to refuse my offer (their profit was nearly 1000% - I'm hoping they'll bring me some exotic animals if I pamper them enough), claiming the items they were being offered were once beautiful trees! :(

It seems pretty logical, but at the same time it seems entirely unreasonable and far fetched. :-\

Clear glass can only be manufactured with sand and potash. Potash is made out of ash. Ash is made out of trees.

So, clear glass, and also crystal glass, is tree by-product and thus unethical. Not a bug.

You can offer them green glass products without trouble.

Yes I suspected and figured as much.

Still, Elves are bastards. ::)

My question: Since elves apparently never do anything except gather plants and smoke rope reed, how do they have an intricate knowledge of glassmaking?

What keeps me up at night is the question of what the kennels the elves train those animals out of are built out of.

The bones and ligaments of the animals that they couldn't train.

Piled stone trinkets lashed together with threads of unpicked narrow clothing.

My major export has to go SOMEWHERE.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

I'm tempted to say they're made out of bones or something, since that would actually seem logical, but what seems more logical is that Elves don't need kennels. They 'at peace with nature' anyway are they, why do they need to keep stuff in cages?

Is that confirmed? The wiki page on Trading says that while it was once believed elves refused only clear and crystal glass, they also refuse green glass even if it's made at a magma furnace (and thus doesn't even involve charcoal). Is this information in error?

I heard (read on wiki) that they accepted all furnace goods that didn't REQUIRE wood or animal products, even if they could be made with them (and they have no way of knowing). Of course, the wiki changes a lot.

In other words: A palantir wiki is a dangerous device, all that it shows you is controlled by Sauron the internet, and other powers unknown.

I thought Elves were cannibals.  That said, wouldn't they have an awful lot of Elf Bones and Elf Skulls to make stuff out of?

On the other hand, they do seem to show up with lots and lots of logs.  Do they give birth to wood, or just poop it out?  Or maybe they just ask the trees nicely for a few log-sized branches.  Or maybe they milk dryads.  I don't know.  I'm not an Elf (Armok be praised).
