Get! Out! Of! The! Stinking! Dining! Room!
« on: August 16, 2009, 06:27:37 am »

for my first post, I must admit.
I have some extremely stupid dwarves. not only are they hanging out in the dining room, throwing parties every 5 minutes, but the thing isn't even the meeting hall anymore. they are driving my poor leatherworker mad, because I have no leather, and my butcher is apperently deaf to my demands to get him to his shop and kill some of the dogs that are overruning my ... You geussed it... dining room. can anyone tell me whats wrong? I didn't expect to have this much "fun" at this point in the game.

Is your butcher considered "on break"?
If he is, just draft and undraft him from the military.  I believe that works.

Also, maybe you accidentally had multiple meeting halls there?  Or a statue garden?  Or a zoo?

Its a starting fortress, so no zoos or anything of the like (devoid of cages). my butcher is not putting up "on break" but "no job" Instead. now, I'm sure that I gave him plenty of jobs to do (those poor poor puppies [evil]), but he still is just hanging around the party without being there. I'll try the drafting thing tough.

Did you turn off auto-butchering from the orders menu? It could just be that the butcher's workshop doesn't have a "Butcher animal" job queued, even if you've designated a bunch of puppies for butchering.

Draft him and station him at the workshop to make sure it's pathable. If that fails check that the butcher's workshop isn't forbidden, that there's a butcher job active in it and the skill requirements for the workshop are OK.

I found out what was wrong. It seems that I forgot to mark the pups for execution. I fixed it and I now have a shiny new leather....Shoe. Thanks anyways, guys.

I originally misread your post title as "sinking", which conjured up Titanic-esque images that were hilarious in context of the game. So perhaps filling it with water would do the trick. :)

this begs the question;

why has no one recreated the Titanic yet?

Because it's not as dramatic to get the message "A section of the cavern has collapsed""Your fortress has crumbled to it's end." A true titanic-esque sinking would require more detailed physics, something we won't see for quite a few more builds if ever.

I'm working on a similar floodgate mechanic for my moat.

This sounds like a good project.

Should it be made out of iron?

Actually, you should make the Titanic shipwreck out of microcline in a mountain/hills/ocean (or lake) area with copious amounts of magma. Dock it in a dry place, then pour fifty thousand tons of magma onto its face and every dwarf inside.

Then laugh as the dwarves who were in the ship get thirsty and want some nice ol' dwarven rum. Then laugh again as the magma kills all their remaining cats. Then laugh AGAIN as the lake/ocean area turns to obsidian. THEN you can laugh because the one dwarf that was outside fishing cancels his job, goes berserk, and wrestles a carp to death, before dying himself.

Your fortress has crumbled to its end.

Titanic: Dwarf Edition. Improved in all ways! Some elf-killing can be mixed in at your leisure for quality assurance.

Because dwarven lovers never actually talk to each other, that's why.

If someone does recreate Titanic, DF style, I think it's only fair to use magma in place of water.

I must admit, however, I would be much more eager to see "King Kong, Dwarf Edition."
