worst luck with moods
« on: August 15, 2009, 04:20:47 pm »

Ok, so I'm on my 2nd serious fort, population is at 62 and I've had 5 strange moods so far. The first two were my armorer and weaponsmith, they got possessed even before I even thought about starting a metal industry. I locked their doors and let them starve to death.

My third mood was my starting carpenter, he picked up two items and made a door worth about 400... That's it.

The 4th one was a jeweler, I had everything except gems, I eminently set all my miners to explore an entire z-level. My map seems to be devoid of all gems.

My latest one was a metalworker.   This time, I was prepared and had spare copper bars laying about. Except he needed gems... I know what I'm buying next caravan, but it's gonna be to late.

Has anyone had worse luck than this?

My planter and cook both got secretive moods, then made wooden and stone idols, respectively.

But 400, I don't think that's possible... An artifact made out of only one unit of wood or common stone always has a value of at least 3000, I think... are you sure you didn't miss a zero in there?

quick question, if I make raw glass, will that satisfy a strange mood's need for gems?

Raw glass is not considered an uncut gem. Cut glass is considered a gem, at least as far as I've noticed.

Not really that bad, but my worst luck with moods was when a clothier got a secretive mood, but I had no cloth. Unfortunately, because he had one of those useless jobs, he was friends with everybody. Hilarity ensues.

I have had a fortress that out of 10 moods, only one of them was actually fey. The rest were possessions. Sucked horribly. At least I had the material on hand. I always make sure to leave home with some spider silk, a couple of cheap cut gems (Agate works) and a spare metal bar.

My worst luck with moods was on a fort with no wood. I embarked with 20 logs (was tight on points :\, camels are expensive). After some rapid expansion my first mood was a fey single aluminum door valued in the tens of thousands. The next 5 moods all proceeded to use up all my remaining wood, each referencing the aluminum door and producing no legendaries thanks to possessions. To make matters worse, none of the artifacts even came close to that first one (even when added up), even though it only used a single material.

It was like the game was taunting me.

I once had 4 legendary bone crafters, 3 of which were children, despite making a dozen dabbling weaponsmiths to steer the moods. Then I finally got one of those dabbling weapon smiths moody, but he became possessed.

I really wish children were exempt from moods.

I've been pretty good about supplying materials for moods. I always get plenty of leather, bars, cloth and gems from traders.

Poor dwarves...all you had to do was build a single temporary smith. You didn't need a whole industry set up.

What? Wouldn't that door alone boost someone's room to Grand? And hell I'd love to have a pair of artifact doors for the fortress entrance.

The first artifact in my current fort was an Alder toy hammer, menacing with spikes of Alder. One single ingredient, value 2400.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I dont see this as a bad thing, but ive had a possesed glassmaker make an artifact from one raw green glass, and it was something worthless. However, the resulting legendary glassmaker soon replaced every wall in my fort with a masterwork statue (soon being about 5 years), and all my dwarves are incredibly happy for seeing all the nice statues.

No. A dwarf will specifically request (or sketch) glass if it is required for an artifact.
