Coastal Defense
« on: August 15, 2009, 03:11:36 pm »

I have set up a coastal fort and walled off all land access.  Should I also build walls on the coast?  Will goblins or orcs (I'm using the orc mod) swim into my base from the rear?

Naw. But beware, wet sand looks just like water, and they WILL go on that. Make sure your wall actually reaches all the way out to the coast, or they can walk around.

If you have nothing better to do you can probably have quite a bit of fun setting up batteries of ballistas, machine gunners and catapults to oppose the Goblin D-Day that will never happen. Carry out practices firing weapons into the ocean. You won't be attacked but it will make your fort look really cool. Extra points if you dig out a U-boat pen and construct an immmobile submarine out of steel in it.

That would be pretty cool. Build a column of steel and put a block of clear glass at the top, a "periscope" if you will. Build a screw pump at the stern to serve as propulsion. It could be hand-cranked or powered by a perpetual motion machine.

Bonus points if the hull is made entirely out of Black Bronze to make it stealthy at night.

Bonus points if you draft 20 or so dwarves at a time, seal them in the sub with enough food and booze for a year, and submerge it completely under water. (You would have to have it in a large tank, then pump water into it.)

MEGA bonus points if you have ballista "torpedoes" and working ballast tanks.

ULTRA MEGA POINTS if you mod uranium in and make it produce nuclear miasma that gives dwarves internal injuries and then lock your 20 dwarves in with a dwarf nicknamed Captain Alexi Vostrikov and let him try to sort of the revolutions and quarantines (if you manage to mod the nuclear miasma in properly, please tell me how actually)

No way to do that. You could make it boil at room temperature, but it would actually be harmless.

I thought things boiling at room temperature froze everything around it.

The goblins and orcs won't, but the zombie tunafish might.

That would make an epic movie. Early morning, Fortress of the Shining Rocks. A single lookout keeps watch out over the calm waves. Suddenly, zombie tunafish stand up and walk out of the ocean towards the fortress. As bolts are let loose and ballista slam into the beach, the mighty zombie whaleshark appears. Cue fun.

Just to be clear, I was not entirely kidding.
