Is Sythun in the military? She is really strong and tough, with the most military experience as my save. You can always train some useless sacks of meat soap makers and peasants on ice-digging before the move to valuable rock. I suggest making Sythun do all the mining if you hit a vein of ore (disable mining on all the rest/make Sythun a miner if shes in the military), so there is a 100% chance of getting ore. If there are other legendary miners, use them.

I cry whenever a dabbling miner hits an aluminum vein and i ends up with 5 tiles with no ore in them before i can stop them.

Aren't Rhesus Macaques actually whales?
They're actually a special ore. Instead of being mined, they're hunted from between the trees and instead of producing metal, they produce food: rhesus pieces.

I'm interested in taking part in this community fortress. As it is, though, I've never taken part in a community fortress. If you don't mind a noob to community forts (but not to DF), then sign me up.

Also- is the graphics set necessary play your fort? And if so, is it already bundled with your save file?
No it is not. You can hand a game between 15 different people, all with differing or even No graphic sets, and the game will work fine. Its when folks are using MODS that they need to be the same.

Sweet, im TOTALLY not dead yet!
Yes, but you ARE married to Rossbob.
Well crap...
Buddy, you better give me the GOOD alochol you brew or im leaving your ass :P

Much as it pains me, I think I'll have to skip this round.  Sorry, but I've got other things I ought to be doing, and the fortress probably needs more attention than I can give it right now.  So blah28722 is next, I guess.  Good luck!

...Because I can't quite convince myself to give up, I'll go on to say that the entrance (and most of the fort) should probably be relocated to the breach Taco Dan made in the aquifer.  The farms are conveniently close by, and the only trees are in the general vicinity as well.  As it is, all the workshops are a bit too far away from the farms to achieve any sort of efficiency.  Also, the clerk needs to sit down and do a bit of record-keeping for once.  And KaziArmada is about to have a baby, I think.  I want nothing but the very best for my son or daughter!

And with that I'm out.  It would be fun, I'm sure, but sometimes there's just too much to do.  Sorry.

I'll edit this as I go along.

The Journal of Urist McMean Jr.

Spring

1st Granite
By Armok, the people living here are idiots! It's freezing cold! Who'd want to live in this frozen hellhole?
I asked for the report on how our supplies are, and all I got was a "Uh.. around... two hundred?".

I've decided to take matters into my own hands and start updating the stockpiles. It's not like any of these drunk morons could count, anyway. At least it'll keep me out of the cold.

There's apparently some kind of exercise craze going on here. I have to run a marathon just to get from the bedrooms to the supplies, then another one to get to the workshops, then three to get to the food, then two to get to the dining hall, which is woefully tiny.

Holy crap that's long.

The idiots are also throwing a party. What are they celebrating? How cold it is? I told them to get to work. First, organize the workshops a bit.

4th Granite
We need bags.

There's seeds everywhere.

On the topic of seeds, KaziArmada gave birth while drunk out of her mind. I'm sure she'll make a great mother.

5th Granite
We had all of 2 pieces of cloth in this place. I ordered the horse and mule slaughtered. Two more is better than nothing.

I told Dumat that there's no gems to be set around here, and that if he wanted to live, he'd better learn to tan, leatherwork, weave, and sew.

The terror on his face as he works is delicious.

10th Granite
What the hell.
The only things to eat here are plump helmet and more plump helmet.
Who decided not to embark with seeds? They cost, like, one dwarbuck each.

13th Granite
Does this guy have the attention span of a fluffy wambler? He seems to be terrible at everything.

I'm promoting him to our main mason. We can finally get some tables around here.

14th Granite
The recruits are standing around doing nothing. I told them they looked like girls and should learn to fight.

They're ripping their clothes off each other right now.

15th Granite
Cloth! I mean Elves!

21st Granite
Too sleepy, letting one of the idiots handle the trading.

22nd Granite
This is Stakud writing. Am I really an idiot? There's some kobolds ambushing right now. I'm not sure how they got to the food pile.

23rd Granite
I think Deler's a bit hurt.

He was trying to find his eyeballs before he blacked out. He's making a funny sound from the hole in his neck.

27th Granite
I finally had enough sleep.
Apparently, me being gone a week means someone has to die. They got in through a very convenient stair that lets you right into the fortress. I'm walling it off.

8th Slate
Thanks to this massively long path, nothing is getting done at all.
I think we've managed to plant four plump helmets. We're all going to starve.

19th Slate
I've decided to do something about this horrible distance we have to travel.
I'm moving most of the fortress inwards. The old parts will become bedrooms, and we'll keep the workshops and food much closer.

24th Slate
Migrants arrived. I hope they freeze to death.
We only have 15 units of plants to live on until the next few plump helmets grow. Ugh.

1st Felsite
We got some 20 migrants. Went from 18 to 37.

30th Felsite
With that, spring is over.

Overall, I'm surprised we didn't starve yet. I managed to get some food made at the last moment.

Goals for the year:
Make the fortress at least somewhat effecient. We'll put the kitchen near the workshops so these balls of lard won't have to run a mile to work off that plump helmet they ate.

Workshop room with storage rooms dug out.

Underground path to mining shaft so invaders stay out.

New dining hall.

Ha ha... er, ha. About that hallway... There was no soil in he main are of the fortress, so I had to go up to get to it.

And about that tunnel... i tried to collapse the soil to breach the aquifer. Didn't work.

Good job with the organizing! I moved the food stockpiles up in my save. The one that DIDNT WORK T_T

Summer

1st Hematite
The humans are due to arrive in two weeks, and we have nothing to trade them! I told stakud and some other people lazing about to start making crafts.

6th Hematite
I told the farmers to stop wasting time doing peasant work and start farming.

13th Hematite
The dwarves are having some sort of massive sleepover two days before the humans are due to arrive. Lazy bums.

14th Hematite
Humans arrived a day early. We have one and a quarter bins of trade goods.

20th Hematite
We started trading today. I tossed in some of the clothing leftover from the kobold ambushes. Maybe the humans will want to sniff them or something. Apparently, they did, because they're offering 2000 DBs' for it.

I don't think we're going to get any more animals from traders. We'll have to catch our own or hope someone brings a pet and lets them breed.

21st Hematite
We got our first anvil, some cloth, some leather, some plants to brew, and a couple of picks. I assigned a few of the no-good lowlifes to mining duty.

I found an interesting engraving today.

What a crybaby.

2nd Malachite
The humans really want mugs.

3rd Malachite
Tekkud was screaming like an idiot today.

Chased him next to the depot, so I'm letting the humans take care of it.

11th Malachite
I told the numbskulls they could use talc to make things, that's why I have a stockpile of it next to the workshops.

They were genuinely shocked. Idiots.

14th Malachite
Stakud was taken by a fey mood. He's taken a craftdwarve's shop. For some reason, I am feeling a powerful rage towards him.

16th Malachite

Damn it.

16th Galena
We've been trying to find gems for Stakud. We found some iron ores, but nothing so far.

18th Galena
We've struck yellow jasper!

24th Galena
That idiot.

After putting me through organizing the mining to find him his gem, this is what he gives me?
I'm putting him on stone detailing duty for life.

(He is legendary engraver now)

1st Limestone
Summer is over, and the situation's stabilized a bit. No thanks to these idiots.

The fortress finally made some progress. Doubled wealth is always nice. Since Stakud is on permanent stone-carving duty, it'll look a lot nicer soon.

Food is a lot more stable, so we won't starve next season. We've also got a lot more trading goods, so we can finally get those seeds when the dwarves come.

Autumn

9th Limestone
I've started mining that limonite vein we found. Also, cutting down trees for some charcoal. We're going to have steel soon!

11th Limestone
Caravan arrived.

2nd Sandstone
Lots of hauling as we've traded a lot of stuff. Stakud is a lot better at engraving than I thought.

22nd Sandstone
Dwarves want bracelets. Not much is going on. I might actually work on that tower.

2nd Timber
That meathead, Udib Onulastel is apparently a champion. I'm not sure how. He's never actually fought anyone.

21st Timber
I sent a champions to deal with the skeletal sasquatch. Let's see how he likes that.

23rd Timber
The champion is trying to strangle the sasquatch to death. I'm considering letting him stay there for a season.

24th Timber

That'll teach him to pretend to be a champion. There's a bunch of dwarf chunks where he was fighting. Heh.
I send a champion with a hammer to kill the sasquatch.

1st Moonstone
Erith walked off his injuries. He's fine now. We're going into the cold, harsh, and cold winter now. Here's how we're doing:

Not too much to talk about, we'll probably do the same in winter.

"Other" refers to cooked meals and... possibly cheese (and flour and sugar)?  The short of it is, yes, there's food enough for the winter.
