Journal of Urist McMean Jr

4th Moonstone, 181, Early Winter
Well, Naxza went and shot himself in the foot during shooting practice. That stupid mayor, Tekkud, doesn't think he can handle the responsibility, so he went and grabbed all the former leaders of Usanlolor.

Interestingly enough, me and Sythun are the only ones alive. And given Sythun's unsatisfactory half-year performance, I was given the job.

Good, maybe I can finally renovate my room.

Anyway, since Naxza didn't do a very good job detailing his projects, I'll just show a rough sketch of some of the newer stuff.

Under the false name of "Community Graveyard", he's built a giant mausoleum for himself. There's something like 50 coffins in there, but the black bronze (purple) one belongs to Naxza himself. Normally, I'd order him to starve in a pit just for that, but I've mellowed a bit since I retired.

There's also a ton of clothing, we need some more bins.

There's also plans for a new wing of bedrooms. I'll start digging, but the next guy can take care of furnishing it.

The tower's expanded to the twelfth level. It's really damn high now.

These could be nice for bone decorations or bolts. Since we're a bit low on marksdwarves, bolts they shall be.

9th Moonstone
The goblins are sieging. There's been reports of cries of agony coming from the deepest parts of the fortress. (OOC: Neruz, you have no well or alcohol. Every single dwarf down there is dehydrated. One just died of thirst.)

For now, drawbridges raised.

21st Moonstone

Cerol, a woodburner, is being particularly secretive at a craftdwarf's workshop. He seems to be engraving some stone.

23rd Moonstone

After repeated complaints about the screams from deep within the fortress, I've organized a small group of miners to search for the source. I've heard tales of these pits of death back in the mountainhome. This mission is being conducted with utmost secrecy. I will let the miners die if need be.

24th Moonstone

According to reports, the source of the screams originated near where Neruz and several other miners were lost in a cave-in. They've been given permission to dig.

Also, Cerol has begun working on something. Lots of rocks, a piece of leather, and a few gems there. Not sure what he's planning.

25th Moonstone

The miners discovered something... strange.

We've discovered the dead bodies of Neruz and the missing miners. Apparently that bastard has lived in this hole for over a year now. I can't understand why he'd do this. I understand that he's a selfish fool, but why would he lock himself in there?

1st Opal

Cerol made a pretty nice bracelet, apparently. I value it at around 24,000 dwarfbucks. For his useless waste of materials, I've sentenced him to lifetime stone detailing duty as well. (OOC: Legendary Engraver).

We've buried Neruz. After going through his documents and performing some checks, we've determined the cause of death. Apparently, he used a cave-in as an excuse to relieve himself from his duty to the fort. He retired to a luxurious dungeon that he built using the fortress' efforts. Then, in one of the worst planning disasters I've ever seen, he forgot to build a well. After exhausting what little booze he stored, he died thirsty and alone.

He shall go down in history as one of the most foolish leaders we've ever had.

27th Opal

I've very impressed with how our bridge made of water is holding the siegers at bay.

7th Obsidian
Got tired of Stakud wanting to retrieve his sock or something that was outside the gate. Crushed the siege. Letting the dwarves out to clean up the traps a bit.

28th Obsidian

My temporary position as leader has ended, and here's my usual status report.

We finally accounted for all the missing dwarves this season. That puts us at 79 members. The fortress is doing all right. It's quite a mess though.

We've got a ton of things taking up room. We'll need to get rid of them.
When the elves come, trade whatever they'll take for some wood. We'll be need more wood fo bins.
When the humans come, show them how superior dwarves are and give them as much as they can take. Take everything.
Same with dwarves. Maybe offer some stuff, since we have so much of it.

The bedrooms are dug out, but need furniture. We're low on doors.

Overall, the fortress is in good shape. Plenty of food and workers. We're a bit low on space, but that's easy to fix.

One final word to my successor:

Rookie, if you want to live, read carefully. So far, every single leader who's wasted the entire year building his own little luxury mansion has died. I suggest that you follow the footsteps of the ones that are still alive.

Wow, I count thirteen stories on that tower, it's coming along nicely, W e should probably cap it off when we hit the skybox.

I'm back:

If I had a knot in my luscious beard for everytime somebody asked me a favor my face would be covered by a birds nest. Two nights past a courier brought me word that my second cousin once removed on his sister's side, Urist McMean Jr., was in desperate need of assistance. Apparently he was the governor or overseer of one of our more prosperous outposts, one that happened to be right in the middle of a haunted glacier. He described how attractive his post was, a life of luxury and relaxation, with good pay and benefits too! To my great surprise he offered me this post with no strings attached! Naturally I was suspicious.

After much consideration and hard thinking I decided to strike my pickaxe into the challenge. To go to Murderletter, the Haunted Glacier.

1st Granite, 182 Murderletter

I have arrived. The steppe is cold, yielding slowly to a long sheet of ice. In the distance a tower rises above the frozen expanse, heralding my arrival at this "arctic paradise". Apparently I was one of many. Ahead of me I could see the black dots of other migrants all attracted by the idea of riches hidden deep below the snow and ice.

2nd Granite, 182 Murderletter

As a new arrival I was assigned to the barracks. The stench in the air was almost tangible, the halls small and crowded, dimly lit, and poorly ventilated. The magnificent tower was unoccupied, a relic of bygone projects. The nobles scorned us, the new arrivals, and I was assigned to hauling ice deep into the bottom of the earth. My body ached, I wanted a drink and a plump helmet. Nothing could have been worse.

Then Urist found me. He quickly set things to rights and lead me to a magnificent apartment, so different from the crammed little bedrooms not a stonestrike away.
"Cousin, cousin! Welcome to Murderletter!" He quickly gave me a detailed status of the fortress, which, to my surprise, was extremely wealthy and endowed with substantial mineral deposits. He told me of the folly of Neruz who entombed himself in a cave deep below the ground and then hurriedly gave me a rather flimsy looking rod with a hammer engraved on it.
"This is the scepter of leadership all Hail!"
I turned to see dwarves scratching their beards and bowing. I tried to smile.

18th Granite, 182 Murderletter

I have been received well by the citizens. All 79 paid their respects before insisting that I continue to haul stone. Apparently no one but former leaders are above hard labor in this outpost. I have begun digging a new set of apartments, constructing more beds and bins as well as doors, and looking to our idler problem.

Later: A woodcutter came running towards me babbling about something. I tried to calm the dwarf down, he finally collapsed and gasped: "Goblins!"
Those bastards! Attacking us here! I activated the military and stationed the two marksdwarves we had. The first wave fell like flowers to our line of stonefall traps. The second didn't make it past our drawbridge.
I watched from the ramparts in horror as they tore Ross McBob's cat to shreds right before our eyes, threatening to do the same to all of us.
Now we wait, and I plot my next move...

1st Slate, 182 Murderletter Under Siege
Today we celebrated the christening of KaziArmada the Second with a rather large party at a gabbro table. For some reason the dwarf kept protesting, "But...my name is Urist! And I'm not even related to KaziArmada." No matter! I dunked him liberally in a barrel of fine dwarven beer and he seemed to gradually become more appreciative of his new name.

I was getting a rather fine drink from one of the barrels when a marksdwarf came running towards me babbling something or other. He voice was paralyzed with fear so he scratched a single letter in the ice: "D".
What could this mean??? "D"?
I immediately set out to his post to see for myself what was waiting out there on the glacier. If he had been frightened by a dog it had been be a fucking huge hellhound. I scaled the stairs and peered through the fortifications, straining my eyes in the blinding daylight. I felt slightly nauseated.

Nothing.

Blank whiteness as far as the eye could see.

Wait.

I saw a dark shape move down in the valley below.

Oh Armok protect us.

The "D"ragon Ebbak Kimakara Ostri Lelgo, Ebbak Pearlheats the Wealth of Luxuries had arrived at Murderletter!

Maybe we can retrieve the corpse and eat dragon meat and make dragon bone crafts.

EDIT:
I'm thinking of writing a summary of what's happen so far at some point and uploading it somewhere in case new readers don't want to sift through other posts.

EDIT2:
I wonder if DFFD would let me do that?

14th Slate, 182 Murderletter

I have directed the dwarves to begin delving new projects in the depths. I hope they come to fruition ere disaster befalls us again.
The fearsome Dragon is no more, cut down by a horde of ravenous goblin swine. I saw a few crushed corpses underneath and I thanked the gods that my enemies were so willing to slaughter one another. I gave the order and my dwarves sallied forth from their positions, taking to the field of battle.
They watched, their taunt limbs straining with anticipation, as the horde of gobbos rushed towards them. I held my breath as the enemy crossed the first line of stone-fall traps, their axe-lord leading the charge. A serendipitous stone fell and decapitated the axe-lord, right in front of his minions.
They stood around with blank expressions before turning around and bolting for the edge of our domain. Nineteen goblin pikemen and wrestlers fled in the face of a few stone-traps and five Champion dwarves. I expected as much.

Felsite, 182 Murderletter

I apologize for the lack of progress reports. Work continues apace. New apartments have been delved, work continues on my projects, and I’m trying to decide what to do with the apartment of the deceased Neruz. It seems that some squatters have adopted the place. I see no other choice by eviction after which I’ll have the whole site condemned as uninhabitable. In his haste Neruz forgot about dwarven building codes it seems.

Hematite, 182 Murderletter

I watch as my projects continue to take shape. The humans have arrived and I traded our worthless stone baubles for their whole caravan. They seemed enthusiastic about trading, I felt like we had traded trash for treasure.  The wood supplies are good, food overfloweth as does drink, and my dwarves have never been happier. I have expanded the hallways to accommodate our dwarves and designated traffic zones in order to prevent loss of precious FPS. We had a fisherdwarf go mad! Howling like a monkey he claimed a craftdwarfs shop and created:

1st Malachite, 182 Murderletter

Things have been going well. Really well in fact. I daresay my projects should be complete by the middle of winter if not earlier. I was kicking back in the Dungeon Master’s office, talking of fell beasts when one of my wood haulers burst through the door.
“Sir it’s a TITAN!”
“A what?”
“A motherfuckin’ TITAN!”
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I rushed to the ramparts and looked out there for myself. Rising above the hills in the valley below was a giantess of considerable girth and bosom. More Titaness than Titan but nevertheless dangerous. I called up the guard and debated whether or not to raise the drawbridge. I finally decided to do so when I learned my military was fast asleep. I bided my time and waited for the perfect moment to strike.

Oh and that clothier went on to create this skirt. I don't know who would want to wear it though.

Autumn has arrived. The Titan was dispatched with ease and now we wait for the Town Liason to arrive and receive the useless junk that clutters the halls. I have order a new scepter carve out of titan bone, one that will truly display my regal authority.

Limestone, 182 Murderletter

I watch with glee as my project nears completion. Just a little more! Our population has swelled to 88 dwarves and children continue to be born. I mandate the slaughter of all non-essential animals. Food and drink are doing well. I watch the skeletal sasquatches crawl across the glacier, occasionally ordering the military to dispatch them.
The Town Liason arrives! Now trading can begin.

Sandstone, 182 Murderletter

Record of conversation:
“Uh sir?”
“Yes, peasant?”
“There’s been another dragon spotted to the northeast.”
“Let the military deal with it.”
“Very good sir.”

Timber, 182 Murderletter

We have enough tower-cap wood to last until the spring. The sasquatch have been pacified and the dragon… well it won’t bother us either. The Town Liason left most pleased and I selected lots of food, drink and weapons for the next caravan. I have been thrown in jail for violating some sort of work order. I don’t know who this happened. I’ll spend until the middle of winter wasting away here. Thank god they have beer.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Winter, 182 Murderletter

The tundra is frozen, the ice black. My eyes yearn for the sun and sky of home. The cold is eating into my skin and though there is food and drink warmth is in short supply. The dwarves gather by the few furnaces that fire, smelting metal and glass in preparation for the next project. I don't know if I have energy left to rule. I don't know if I will live to see my next winter. My throat is sore from coughing, my eyes run with fluid, and my chest is heavy with the burden of ruling this barren outpost. Perhaps Neruz did it best. Surrounding himself with luxury and vanishing into the depths. Perhaps that is where I shall go too.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Final Advice: Unemployment is killing the FPS. Having 30+ dwarves on dumping duty slows down the game. Specialization for artisans and creating a hauling corps should make this easier. We need to bulk up on crafts again because I sold them all.
