Spore-like content
« on: May 13, 2008, 08:07:00 am »

Hi,
I'd love to see some Spore-like content in DF

For those not familiar with Spore concept: It's about user content appearing in other's game.
In addition to generated content, game could use one's fortress, dwarfs. It could then post back on website how well was fortress standing overall in games.
This could be more interensting after Army Arc

Something to consider on a minor scale once DF is complete.

Keep in mind DF is an alpha, and there are _lots_ of things Toady has to do (like the presentation arc) before he can tackle anything else big. I like the idea, but it's kinda impossible to implement right now.  :)

Uh, no. Spore has distinct user-created elements to share, like creatures, buildings, planets. DF only has worlds. It's impossible (or nigh impossible) to rip a fort away from its resting place in one world and weld it onto another without consequences, and there's nothing else you can create.

Unless DF, in some distant future, becomes a MMORPG run in one gigantic universe on one titanic server, you won't be able to share "parts" of your creations, just your whole worlds.

Actually, it's the fortresses that are user-created. You could technically share one world between several fortresses, but only 1 person at a time can play w/ it.
Hm.. How does Spore deal with this?  :p

Fortresses would be hard to manage, but legendary creatures, or new creatures, maybe?

Or just goods.

Yeah, goods would also be good.

It would give more of a reason to trade away your stuff.

Nah.
We already can share worlds in succession games or by abandoning and giving the world to an inheritor, who then has the legends of the previous forts to add to.

spore is aptly described as a massively SINGLEPLAYER game.
Only the most basic characteristics of other players games are shared, no active play-interaction is possible in the game itself.
The only interaction with other players is via chatting and adding some users to a favorites list, which sets the game to download more stuff that that player has created.
The thing that is shared is content, not context.

For DF that would translate as uploading a player fortress and having it appear in another players' world. Problem is that the fortress is embedded in it's terrain, which is generated for each woprld seperate.
...
or as legends from other dimensions worlds and lands far away. eg not of this world. But with most names randomly generated, I see little point in that actually.

They're called 'mods'.

Simple, really.

Yeah the whole idea of legends and such in DF is that they enrich the world-they are from that world and interact with that world; it's pointless to export them to some other world just for fun.

Edit:  Especially when worlds have their own unique creatures and things, it just becomes less and less feasible.

Inter-universe transfers are a powergoal, IIRC.  I remember Toady mentioning it.

I don't think it was a powergoal; but travelling to different planes and stuff (not different people's computers) is mentioned somewhere in the devnotes.   Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though- either way it's something that'd probably be post v1.   So, a loooong way off  :(

Yeah different Planes are listed

But they are as of so far the elemental Planes... (and may include more... like where Demons come from or something)

Not Alternate Dimensions

It has been stated that each "world" is really a continent. Once boats are put in, why wouldn't two players with different world be able to trade with each other? Perhaps even invasions could occur.
