Sorted Skill List?
« on: August 14, 2009, 03:08:49 am »

Is is possible to have the game sort the displayed skills of a dwarf so that the higher ranked skills go near the top? It's annoying to have to scroll down to check on my military dwarf's weapon skills just because he's dabbling in all the social skills.

I highly recommend a third-party program for this. I've been trying Dwarf Manager lately and I am pretty happy about it. It makes overlooking and managing jobs much easier

I'm certainly a fan of dwarf manager as well, just for the ease of adding custom nicknames/profession names, and toggling skills. do be aware that you can force nobles/children to work via dwarf manager, which is a bit of a cheat....

Dwarf Therapist is pretty good as well, and it's stable with all the 40d# series, unlike Dwarf Manager. The most recent update gives it the edge, in my view.

I agree. I used Dwarf Manager before, but with the newest release I've moved to Dwarf Therapist.

(No link on the wiki "utility" page - where'd you find it? Where's a write-up?)

He sure isn't advertising it very well! I only just found about it when I looked in this topic!

Search for dwarf therapist on the forum.

You said it. I was just searching the boards myself for my own project to see how it was being adopted. I didn't want to break any cross-posting rules, and wasn't really sure where to post it. I guess I should make new announcement threads in the general discussion or something.

Anyways, thanks for using DT!

very late write-up, but wanted to do so all the same, just so that people got my news - i'll write over on the thread as well.

this application is FANTASTIC. seriously, so many wonderful little features. familiarity with dwarf manager helps, of course, but some of the profession set-ups and view alterations, once one gets the hang of them, are brilliantly handy. i have a set up so that i can view dwarves just by hauling designations - easy for tweaking more people onto item hauling when a goblin siege has just brushed by.

you can also view happiness, which i find to be a major plus, as it's handy for monitoring anyone with a massive dip or some (death of siblings/pets/etc). it's the customisation of this utility that really makes it killer - it really feels like it's built so that the player can get the most out of the information from dwarf fortress. really rate it!

It has some quirks (don't they all?), but it's very handy. It recognizes DM as its inspiration, and spins off in some nice directions from that.

In the end, DC, DM and DT all have features that the others don't.  Depends on your priorities whether you use one or more.

One of the things I really like to do with DT that DM doesn't do is have a spare work profile set up that has no labours enabled, at all. Then if traders arrive, if Irealise a dwarf is following the manager around trying to have a meeting, or if the manager is desperate to meet the mayor, I can very easily turned all labours off on the relevant dwarf to get them to be free (ish) for the business in question.

I then have a few different profiles set up that I can switch the dwarf back to when needed (mechanic / grower / mason / hauling / etc - cept I use rather strange bastardised Latin names, for some reason. Not really sure why). It's that one button (sort of) click between a full work profile and a zero work profile that I have found most beneficial. On DM one has to go along checking off all the boxes for a person. Small thing, I know, but hey, simple pleasures...

That feature has mixed attractions - to me at least. I use and change custom professions a lot, and this can wreck havoc with labors if I'm not careful.

You can give "custom professions", which automatically assign your pre-designated mix of labors turned on.  So, it's good if you want to give a new peasant your standard "Miner" mix, but not good if you want to give some specialized niche-worker some label.
