Cruel Irony
« on: August 13, 2009, 02:54:00 pm »

When I started my latest fortress, I selected the name myself rather than generating it, as is my custom. I named it "The Secret of Steel." (I wanted to name it "GuardWell the Secret of Steel" but there's no dwarf word for well.) The embark site was one of the richest I've ever seen, and I found deposits of almost everything of value. The only things missing were Iron ore (all kinds), flux (all kinds), and coal (both bitco and lignite). The only steel in The Secret of Steel is made from imported materials.

Well it's a secret as in your dwarves will never learn how to forge it from ore. OH SNAPS!  :o

I once had a fortress named Stabshoots.

I was playing with invasions turned off so I could just build a megaproject from the get-go....or so I thought I had turned them off.

All of my dwarves were subsequently stabbed and shot to death.   :-[

i have found time and again that using a non-randomly generated name is bad luck and that armok frowns upon your dwarves.

Once, I had an artifact turtle bone bed, called... ready for it? The Altar of Whoring.

Every time I start up DF, I could kick myself for not screening it.

Hot Dorfy love.

I once had a single crossbow dwarf fend off 20 goblins from a single tower so I named him "Urist The All Seeing"
In the next siege I forgot to forbid the door to the tower so a goblin ran up the tower and ripped both of his eyes out.

I was going to start a new thread, but this is just as good as any to post this...

I've generated so many worlds and read so many histories and always laughed at some of the naming conventions and results.

However, I appeared to have used them all up:

It's genius! Just like Greenland and Iceland but dwarves instead of vikings! The goblins will invade your fort instead of somewhere important to the King that can make steel!

I suppose that's what I get for naming a fort for viking-themed heavy metal.

Even if you have dwarves decked out in cotton candy they will still have fun with clowns.

You DO realize that just because you LIVE in the Secret of Steel, that dosent mean your Dwarves Actaully KNOW the Secret of Steel...Thus, it is forever out of your reach...

Oh, Irony is hysterical...

My latest fortress was named Demoncave... Needless to say, I failed to ever reach the magma, let alone any HFS. Instead I managed to have my hydro-environmental engineering project go awry and flood everything from the fourth z level down...
