Actually, if you fall off the world you end up in a strange place known as the Desktop.

Not only is it not actually advertising anything, it's just copy/pasting word salads about gold, runescape, oil, yuan, and handbags.  It's like a transporter accident combined all the spambots into one shambling mass of online sales.

-As you reach the edge, a spiritual force makes even men of impervious willpower choose to go back, for any number of reasons they think to be their own

That makes me want to rig a mechanical cart to go over the edge and strap myself in. Cog wheels are immune to spiritual brainwashing and if I'm tied down properly it won't matter how much I want to go back.

As you build, you feel an insatiable urge to play Dwarf Fortress. ;)

If DF gets to point where we can have actual flat worlds, here's my idea to help my Dwarves survive the trip over the edge of the world:

_______
          |
          |
______|______
#                 #
#   D D   % D #
---------------

Build a pod suspended over the edge, and put Dwarves, food and booze in it. Then cut the cable, and hope that they survive the landing, if there is one.

For added points, strap Elves to the bottom of the pod, so they cushion the landing somewhat.

For mega bonus points, make it menace with spikes of obsidian on the bottom, THEN "fasten" the elves to it.  ;D

For SUPER-BONUS POINTS but 3 groups of husband and wife in, that way if they fall for long enough, when they land they will have enough dwarves to begin a new world, and yes I do realize that  it would involve alot of incest but since dwarves are basically retarded anyways I don't think it will affect them.

Trying to catch man-eating fish, Running away from safety when the enemies near, ADOPTING CATS and walking on ice in spring doesn't count?

Dwarves ARE indeed intelligent, they're just not very wise and totally oblivious of danger :D
Hell, the current way DF dwarves behave goes well with your average tolkien dwarf IE being intelligent and brave, but greedy and not quite aware of danger.

Of course civs start worldgen with 10 peope each, meaning that all civ-forming creatures are products of inbreeding (except the occasional elf that survives from the first 10 worldgen)

It's fantasy, fantasy doesn't worry about all this genetics nonsense.

Of course!
In fact, a dwarf with more toes is considered of higher rank than others!

As are dwarves with enormous, ten-kilo noses, shriveled eyes, and teeth growing through their chins.

Actually, it works out. The more a Dwarf looks like Michael Jackson, the higher his rank, and you know what we do with nobles...

There's still a problem though: if we voyage through space, how will we deal with the dreaded GSS and the terrifying Astro-Carp?

Once tried to conquer Earth, and succeeded! Too bad it got really, really boring, really, really fast.

One day, we shall all look back on this, and laugh. Sorry about the face, by the way, and the legs, and the eyes, and the arms. In fact, sorry 'bout the whole body.
