I think that it would be interesting if with every world that was generated, it could be either round or flat.

But Toady would probably have to overhaul the world generator to make the edges match up.

And there would probably be a bizarre bug causing the oceans to empty out into blue hell everytime you generate a flat one. ;D

I suppose you could feed the fortress with all the air-drowned whales.

And thus did the dream of dwarven antigravity fade away, not with a massive explosion or a flood of magma, but with a whimper.

I'm going to be depressed all day now.

I think when you fall into the fissure of the edge of the world, you end up in the land of Myst.

listen to Thetis, a seatroll who used to live on a flat world and fell down...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

you see, falling from the edge of the world brings you to the famous Discworld (the link takes its time to load since it's the whole book on one page...).

If you survive the freezing.

EDIT: i think i should call my blinded cheesemaker "Rincewind". it fits him.

Ha, yes! Dwarven spaceships!

The first one would have to be called the D.S. (Dwarf Ship) Urist. Or maybe the Urist McShip.

The HMS D.C. (Dwarven Cheese)

HMS stands for Her Majesty's Ship, and applies only to UK ships.
Unless I missed a memo, DF is not UK. Hence the acronym "D.S."

Why not have it be Armok's Space Ship or A.S.S.?

I think Toady said somewhere the currently generated worlds are merely slices of worlds, not entire ones themselves. Through the round worlds and flat worlds discussion is not out of the question for later when entire worlds do come, note the current ones are not applicable.

I personally like to think that the world of DF occurs in a Klein bottle.

Might this mean, that if you wander to the side of an existing world, like the ones used in the curren version, the world generator would just continue the area from the edge and make a new world next to the old one? Thus making the world grid just a part of an even larger grid like the actual play areas are a part of the world grid. If all the worlds would be just generated from the existing seed by continuing to calculate the world creation algorithms over the map edge, we could get pretty much infinite areas until our hard drives are full, or the old worlds are just forgotten as we go and then regenerated from the old seed.

However, I dont know how civilizations could be adjusted be to this.

No, I think it would eventually make you go in a circle. Well, or you fall off the edge.

As it is, just try to think up a lore explanation. Here's some examples:
-The world is cursed, binding all mortal things within invisible walls
-As you reach the edge, a spiritual force makes even men of impervious willpower choose to go back, for any number of reasons they think to be their own
-Your adventurer cannot exit the region due to stringent immigration law
-There is a conspicuous mountain ring around the world, too large to cross (seeing as water freezes)
-The Adventure Package you are subscribed to charges a crazy per-minute amount for long-distance adventuring
-That's the I-67. Why would you leave the renaissance fair?
