Your problem is that your fort's entrance/gate is the same as the exit.
You should have a bailey(IIRC?) , or a small courtyard between your fort entrance and the gatehouse/killing grounds.
Code: [Select]
fort interior (civvy dorfs)
exit
'outside' enclosed mustering yard
gatehouse (outside or a constructed tower to taste)
outside (goblins etal.)

I had an engraver stranded outside during an ambush once. He didn't go inside because apparently he couldn't find his way back to the entrance without going outdoors. He was moving around quite erratically, and strayed very close to the attacking goblins a few times.

I should note that he was a legendary engraver and that I didn't want to lose him.

This culminated in him finally deciding to go inside NOT BECAUSE I TOLD HIM TO, but because he wanted a drink. of course, this was AFTER he wandered over to the goblins again, and in a display of very stupid badassery, punched out a spearman, grabbed the spearman's helmet, and ran off into the hills.

Ordering dwarves indoors seems to cause very strange issues with their AI.

I think it's because of the way 'inside' is defined in various ways.
for 'stay indoors' and cave adaptability (I think) it is defined as 'used to be solid rock', while [k] description will define any tile that has a (light)blocking tile or construction above it as 'inside'.
Hopefully this will be rectified in the next release... at least the barrows-system removes the discrepancy from the 'stay indoors' state.

For 'stay indoors' (and, I'd imagine, cave adaptation, too, but I don't know if for certain), it's defined as "It has never been aboveground", where aboveground is an state defined by a lack of a natural rock/soil/cast obsidian roof.

Note that once a square has been tagged as aboveground, it can never revert to underground, not even if you make obsidian over it. Also note that constructed roofs/floors/walls do not stop it from being aboveground.

Yea, the 'dwarves stay indoors' thing is suppoused to be done away with and there is a new system in place. I forget how exactly the new system is suppoused to work, but I know it involves the burrows (also a pun on Buroghs (sp?) ).

I know that, I meant its a pun on buroughs, as in the five buroughs of New York

Wish there was some way to designate an area that dwarfs are not allowed to walk onto under ANY circumstances. A forbidden zone that they will NEVER walk on.
