Just how bad is ... fire ... exactly?
« on: August 12, 2009, 04:12:47 pm »

So my weaponsmith nicked the edge of a magma pipe and died a fiery death. I get that. Unfortunately it flooded the access to the magma pipe as well as the route to the bauxite and bituminous coal. The elves are no help since I've got about 200 logs in my megastructure. And the the human diplomat just threw himself off the top of my scaffolding in a bout of insanity (durn it, I forgot he was in there!). Dwarves are no help for trees ... I just got to get that coal!

Now I only have nine dwarf adults and two are legendary miner/pump/axe/hammer/wrestle/sword/armor/shield. It would be a tragedy to lose one ... but losing one will probably cost me my whole fort. Both of the champions aren't very happy and they happen to be lovers who spend all day "sparring." Or so they tell me. I am quite sure that losing one will cause the other one to tantrum. I don't wish to see an 8x legendary tantrum, not with so much magma on a hair trigger and the first stage of the megaproject close to completion.

Can they, in decent steel armor/weapons, take out a few fire imps and firemen? The first time I tangled with them we basically traded corpses.

More hammers and water is the answer.

I would say that you have a decent chance of winning (I'm assuming no more than 4 or 5 imps.)

But be prepared for wounds, of course.

For the champions? Heck, send them in there. If one gets a kill, it'll be a nice happy thought to keep them from tantruming.

If one dies and the other goes berserk, well, at least the fire imps will die first.  ;)

And a quick heads-up - keep them stationed well away from the magma. You don't want them 'dodging' into it during the battle... or giving chase to a fire imp. After all, having a champion incinerated is annoying.

Fire imps are totally harmless if you dwarves can get in close. That means most military and anyone with a few points in agility (as long, of course, as they don't dodge into magma).

One time, I had a fire imp begin to kill off most of my fort until he became legendary, I'd order everyone inside when he swung around. My untrained mayor dodged three fireballs, at which point I recruited him, seeing as he'd never make it inside. Then, to my surprise, he killed the fire imp with his bare hands. Yeah, he got a royal office.

Moral of the story: Just recruit anyone who gets chased by a fire imp.

Yeah, the first time I fought fire imps my wrasslin dwarves brought them down once they closed with it. But they usually managed to torch one.

Wounds I can deal with. I think a death might screw me.

I'm a little more confident in their abilities now. As the autumn caravan rolled in the orcs sieged. The caravan was massacred but they managed to kill off 36 orcs themselves without a wound. Of course the caravan was a nice distraction to keep them from getting dogpiled ... I think 12 dwarves lost their lives that day.

Umm... can't you just dig a new route to the coal? Or did you mine out the whole coal vein? If you mined it all out, you'll notice that the coal is now on fire.

Oh I could, but I still would need to contend with the imps, who had been seen wandering around the coal.

It doesn't matter ... I struck the HFS and our ruler showed up ... an Elven queen! The dwarves promptly got a belly full of sunshine and then threw themselves into the magma.

Oh, so coal veins can catch fire in DF, just like in real life?   And the RL ones are almost impossible to put out (like this one I visited when I was a kid - burning for 6000 years! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burning_Mountain)

But I guess the seams in DF aren't big enough to cause as much chaos fun

Well, sort of. I'm pretty sure natural coal walls will not catch fire, but stones on the ground definitely do.
This eventually lead to the development of dwarven fire... ignited lignite bar/stone/whatever in a magma-safe bin.
That kind of fire is very FUNtm due to the fact that anything that gets too close catches fire.

It's not the imps wrestling I'd be worried about but the fire. If one of those champions catches fire and makes it back to the fort/through the booze pile then you'll have some fun.

A wrestling imp doesn't shoot fireballs. I think.
