Underground/Aboveground revisions?
« on: August 12, 2009, 01:02:36 pm »

Toady, is there any way we can get some revision of the underground/aboveground system?

Currently, there is no way to reset a tile to dark or underground. There are two ways that it should be doable in my mind:

1: ice
2: obsidian

I think that once a tile has been turned into obsidian, or ice, all tiles below should be considered underground.

I think it is a bit more complicated than that. Basements, after all, are considered to be underground, and have many properties of being underground, without actualy having and dirt over them.

Of course if we just want to keep it simple, your idea works just fine, but i would prefer to have something a bit more complex that involves constructions as well (and maybe adjacent tiles)

Well... Underground is functionally meaningless in reality.  I can see there being a certain merit to needing to know what is in a cave or in 'virgin' rock, but that's about it.

Currently, it's used for 3 gamey things, right?

Dwarfs stay inside (fixed with actual burroughs now)

Growing (really should be 'light' and that's already in as light/dark)

Temperature (should be more complex, long term).

IMHO, what you are talking about is fixing a temporary solution, with all the problems that entails.

Growing (really should be 'light' and that's already in as light/dark)

Also soil conditions. For instance, you should be able (I guess) to grow "underground" type plants in muddy stone, whereas that might be problematic for above-ground plants. And so forth.
