I like the idea of crafting small statuettes or figurines for my dwarves, but it just falls under the category of "idols." What I would like to see (im sure this is in the future development notes somewhere) is figurines that are either more specific, like "a small bronze statuette" or have a more detailed description: "This is a small iron figurine. It is a magma-man. He is raising a stone."

This is one of the things I want to have to put in important dwarve's rooms, along with potted plants, cabinets that actually have stuff in them (books? these statuettes?), maybe colored bedspreads. Carpets, too.

It's been suggested plenty of times before (once by me even about a year ago.)
The same thing with statues.   There's no way Toady won't get around to making them spiffy, we just gotta be patient.
