Demons!
« on: August 11, 2009, 09:13:30 pm »

Time for another request thread! This time? Games with demon summoners. As an option for the player character, obviously.

Ones I know of:

Age of Conan (I actually thought it was pretty good... Demonologist class)
Incursion (Priests of the Multitude count. Hoards of demons, woo!)
Most IRE MUDs (Achaea, Lusternia, etc... not overly fond of them, though)
World of Warcraft (Warlocks... not fond of it, though)
The original Warcraft (Necromancers, I believe, could summon demons?)

And that's about it. Anyone have any others to add?

Pfft.  If you're looking for an RTS with demon summoning, you have got to try Warrior Kings.  Seriously.  Abaddon kicks flippin' A.

Mind you, that game had some MAJOR control issues that would cause me to rip my hair out if I ever tried to play it without the cheats.  The computer players, being the stupid jerks that they were, would of course be able to completely circumvent these issues.  You?  Not so lucky.

Your villagers wouldn't even be able to tell if they were on fire or not.  With the (almost mandatory) invincibility cheat, your entire city could eventually be turned into a raging inferno that belched an entire atmosphere of smoke and fire into the air.  Does this remind you of anything?

The demo lets you play as the pagans, who are the demon summoners.  Try it out.  Also, if you're trying to do things the "honest" way, here's how to win with the pagans...

Step one:  Summon a member of the gibbering horde.
Step two:  Tell it to devour a tree.
Step three:  Go do something else and forget about the hordelings munching down the nearby forest.  By the time you get back, there will be enough of them to kill your CPU.  The enemy player will be child's play.

Dungeon Keeper. Technically, you don't specifically summon the demons, however, with recall and teleporting demons, you can summon directly to the scene of combat. This allows you to both raise and fight with the demons, though you have to go FPS if you want to control a demon.

Triangle wizard. Summoners and warden's summon creatures, though a general range of creatures, and not just demons. Things can get broken with crusade though, especially if you get it, regeneration, and are playing as either a summoner or cerebramancer.

It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

Hmmm...

Dawn of War has demon superunits (Avatar of Khaine and Bloodthirster), and you can get a Demon Prince hero, one of whose sync-kills (fatalities, I guess) basically sends the victim straight to hell.

Also, any RPG based on DnD, like Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate, or Icewind Dale will have you ending up fighting and summoning demons, especially BGII:SoA and Icewind Dale II.

Avencast has some minor summoning elements in it...  You'll end up fighting plenty of them, but you won't really be summoning all that much.  It's still an interesting game though.  Good for handing out the smackdown archmage-style.

Don't have much else to offer up at the moment, other than stating that you could also summon creatures by sacrificing your minions to the dark gods in Dungeon Keeper...  That's actually the only way of getting the horned reaper normally.  And he's worth it.

how can you guys forget Dominions?
(or Mater of Magic/Age of Wonders  for that matter).

These are TBS set in a more (in the case of AOW) or less (in the case of dominions) typical fanstasy world. There isn't a whole lot of demons in the gameplay, but between all the races that have them there are many different kinds. (I haven't played it, but I hear Age of Wonders 2: Shadowmagic  actually had a demonoid race to play, though they probably weren't summoned...)

If we're including roguelikes, we mustn't forget Crawl.

Potentially, Tales of Middle Earth / ToME, the Roguelike, has about three ship fulls of classes. You could play a summoner and summon anything you can make a totem out of (anything you can kill, nearly) or you could play a Demonologist, which uses demon equipment to invoke powers, at least one of them is to summon demons.

You could play a Possessor and play as a demon and possibly gain a summoning spell. Or you could play a Symbiote and get a Demonic Qualthulyg (almost certainly spelled that wrong) or something similar to invoke its powers constantly.

Has a Dungeon Keeper homage in it, I think... I summoned a Horned Reaper, that pushes past and destroys any ally in its way to its target. Very fun.

Demikids for the GBA (Hey, no one said PC only). It's a Pokemon knock-off. Parts of it are terrible, but it seems to be decent as a whole.

Wasn't the "Persona" RPG series, like, focused primary around demon summoning?

I've never played it, just heard a fair amount about it.  (It's high on my list of "need to play, someday".)

You could summon demons but they were always for the most part living constructs of people's subconscious.

However they did have Digital Devil Saga which is almost the same game with exception that one is action.

Let me see

Nox also had summoning which MAY include demons
Might and Magic (I don't know which versions)
Disciple (I don't know which versions... Also I dislike this game)

Civilization IV has an excellent mod called Fall from Heaven which allows you to summon demons... on a civilization-wide scale.

That's the Persona spin-off series.

The main series, Shin Megami Tensei, is about real DEMONS.

And after the Apocalypse. We choose between Neutral, Chaotic , or Order...

Oh, and the new SMT:DS (Demon Summoner) probably qualifies too (DAMNIT I NEED MY DS TO BE FIXED IMMEDIATELY!)
