Magma won't move!
« on: August 11, 2009, 06:20:50 pm »

So I got a map with magma and I made a large tunnel leading to the magma pipe that ends in a large reservoir, over which my forges and such will be built.  Then I opened the channel to let the magma in.  As usual the magma started slowly moving down the tunnel.  When it got to the reservoir however, it slowed down a lot.  I left it alone for a while and focused on other parts of the fortress, coming back every now and again to check on it.  Some times the magma would be covering the entire floor of the reservoir (never more than 2 deep) but sometimes it wouldn't, as though it was receding back into the pipe.  At first I figured I just needed to wait longer, but it's been over a year now, and the reservoir is still not consistently covered in magma, let alone filled with it.  Is there something I'm doing wrong here?  I've used this technique without problems on other occasions...

1/7 magma will evaporate.

I'd recommend using pumps to sort of 'pressurize' the magma somewhat. A larger tunnel or rather several tunnels will help as well. You might want to build the magma pumps a few levels below so you can pump out a larger amount of magma because magma regenerates horridly slow in a pipe.

A 7/7 Magma tunnel pushed forward with pumps will move significantly faster as the pumps really force the magma through.

A pump is really required to move magma, it goes so slowly by itself that it'll evaporate before getting anywhere remote. Since its probably a one time shunting, you dont even need to build a power infrastructure.

Note that if you drop the magma down a z-level it maintains its speed over short distances.

Or the feeding tunnel just needs to be wider to get more flow.

How far is it traveling? If it's approaching 100 tiles it's known to be "too far" for narrow channels of magma to flow without evaporating.
