Siege Weapons
« on: August 11, 2009, 04:36:27 pm »

Do ballista and catapults work the same way as marksdwarves? I know that If they are on top of a 1z wall they cant shoot at anything 1tile against the walls base (2z=2tiles, 5z=5tiles), so does that work the same way for siege weapons? Or is there a minimum range for them like they cant shoot anything 2 tiles or closer even on the ground?

Also, can they shoot over walls?

Siege weapons cannot fire across Z-levels. They can, however, shoot through fortifications with no penalty.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Nope. They are also operated by civilians, so they tend to run away quickly unless you provide adequate separation from the enemy via moat/hallway/etc (whatever the sight range is for indoor dwarves). Ballista have the benefit of enormous range, hitting everything in its path. Catapults are best for training siege operators and getting rid of stone, by the time the projectile hits the ground the enemy has moved on.

In my experience, a wall of fortifications about 20 tiles away from the front of the ballista seems to be sufficient at keeping them from running away in fear.

Also, the orange text is rather annoying.

He doesn't care.  It's been brought up before, repeatedly - it seems since he uses a diff background (black), he feels no obligation to other's sensibilities.

Therefore, I will begin my own form of boycott, and invite anyone else to join.

They only shoot along the same z-level as they are built on - not up, not down.  Catapults can fire over other stuff - only the tile they land on take damage - ballistae are far more deadly (see wiki, "siege engines").

20 tiles seems to be the threshold for scaring operators.

Actualy orange is it not that bad with default colors, if you have a plate screen, on CRT (wich is used still in many places) it shell be terribel. Anyway i haven't seen it becous i read only in black on white (no colors in my screen, 'cause i chosed) However even if i would like a color to write, it would be realy not polite i think to not adobt to the confort of other peoples ... so i am with Albedos opignon ...
