How to make muddy ground with bucket?
« on: August 11, 2009, 03:41:09 pm »

My fortress is on a glacier, and I've just managed to pump magma up a few z-levels. I now have a 7x7 reservoir of liquid water, and I need to make some farms. Can I use a bucket to make some ground muddy?

You could use buckets, yes, but you can only do that with pits, which are zones that you designate over open space. So to do that, you should channel out the ceiling above your farms, and then dump the water in from above that way. I assume you want to use buckets to limit the amount of water used; thus, you'll want to make a single-tile pit zone, designate it for filling, and then remove the zone as soon as a single unit of water has been dumped on it. You'll have to repeat for each tile of your farm.

Mmmm... you could simply channel out the middle tile of the ceiling, designate that as the pond for filling, then wait.  If the pond/pit is close enough to a water supply that the bucket brigade can pour in enough water to get 2/7 on the tile immediately underneath before evaporation sets in, then the water will spread out out to cover the other 48 tiles eventually.

Derakon's method is the surest way to get each tile wet with the minimum amount of bucket-hauling.  Only one is needed for each tile, no evaporation losses.  It needs way more micro-management though.

If you have big farm plots and a small bucket brigade you could somewhat combine the methods  ;)

I've got a limited amount of water in my reservoir- 9x14 tiles (I was worried that 7x7 would run out), at 6-7 depth. Conservation is a must.

dont worry about conservation, just cut off the magma, pump it out and the water will snap freeze on a glacier map. after this just remelt it for 7/7 again. you may consider this an exploit but its up to you i guess
