What's the best way to create a legendary cave-in?
« on: August 11, 2009, 08:28:41 am »

Okay, so my current fort is at population 144 or something, with the king incoming. My food stores are basically overflowing, and due to my neglecting to make a buttload of bins, I have finished goods lying all over the place. And my FPS has gone straight to hell.

Therefore once the King arrives I intend to consecrate him to Armok via a stony tomb.

Okay, so I'm going to destroy my entire embark area with a ludicriously epic cave-in.

Any suggestions on how I can do this?

I mean, my original plan was to either channel out all four edges of the map, as well as digging out all z-levels, but that's way too time-consuming. My second plan is to basically build a titanic roof four z-levels in the air, supported by a single charcoal pillar, connected to a lever I shall name "Tragedy".

Is there a more efficient way to destroy everything?

(Also: I don't have access to magma in this map)

You could make a small room 5x5 or something with a device to make everyone die from roof collapse, make it a meeting area recruit everyone force them into tiny room, then watch the reasulting death and or tantrum spiral of your fortress.

And just in case your nobles don't want to go into the little room, mae thier rooms cave-in to.

Yeah, I was thinking along those lines before.

But then I realized I wanted to create what was essentially a gigantic shaft in the world, and that the only way to do that is with a supreme cave-in.

I mean, I could just collapse the area around the fort, but that seems... undwarfy.

Well then i guess the easiest solution is to build a roof for the area, then pull the lever to crush area

any other way would take forever and would just lead to lower frame rates because of all the Stone lieing about afterwards

Argh, yeah, I was hoping you wouldn't say that.

Well, off to build a roof. At least this way I can build loads of scaffolding to save time.

if you're going for efficiency then you could just atomsmash him.. I really don't see it being that legendary anyway, if you can't do the whole map.

A roof isn't going to do much to your fortress if it's underground unless you have a thin ceiliing and it's a verticle fort or with a lot outdoors.  If you channel the four sides (carve ramps and then remove them) and then just the bottom level it will kill everyone most likely and flatten your fortress.  Won't get a giant pit but you won't with a ceiling anyway and it will be MUCH faster.

This.
Up/down staircases mean less micromanagement until they get done.

I'd suggest going the "collapse the entire fortress" route. You don't need to dig out the four edges of the map; just dig out around the actual fortress proper. That should save a lot of time, especially if your fortress doesn't use all of the z-levels available.

I've actually dug a huge mineshaft all the way down to the last z-level, plus my fortress has an aboveground thing. The the mineshaft is directly below my fortress, and it's massive.

I punched all the way through to the bottom just recently by collapsing a roof on my trade depot (to kill elves) which is why I was thinking of dropping the sky on my embark area.
