Greetings from the wintery fortress of Zolakagak, a proud "village" of 109 dwarves and 40 goblin prisoners all kept in nice neat cages.

I have found through personal experience that the best defence for my fortress, on account of it having one entrance and being based solely underground (yes, my dwarves are now cave adapted), is to coat the main hallway floor in cage traps.

So far, this has worked splendidly and recently Zolakagak survived the worst siege it has ever had, with most of the goblins being taken prisoner, butchered into tiny pieces or chased away.

However, originally I decided that I would place the goblin cages upon a bridge which I would retract and therefore drop the "free" goblins into a pit with a forbidden door leading inside below full of nothing but excess ice and darkness.

Seeing as I am inexperienced in creating this pit of goblin prisoners, how exactly would I do this?

Step 1: Dig hole
Step 2: Designate area around hole for animal stockpile
Step 3: Cover hole with hatch cover
Step 4: Designate hole a Pit/Pond
Step 5: Mark Prisoners for pitting

So I don't need to have an elaborate method of trying to open these cages first, do I? And I also take it feeding is not a problem?

Oh dear. I attempted your method and they murdered a peasant.

Now I see. I shall get working.

Nope! just set the prisoners to be thrown into a pit, then pick your favored method to kill em' all.

Heh, guess not everyone can be as lucky as me

You can strip them of their weapons and armor first by doing a mass dump designation on the cage stockpile, then un-marking the dump tag on each individual cage.

After that you can pit a little more safely, but still beware of thieves and snatchers. They are slippery, and may (always?) get away when you're trying to pit them.

If the cage of the creature you are pitting is right next to the hole, chances are they will not be able to escape.

Placing the cages next to the hole allowed me to dump goblin master thieves, snatchers, and anything else near the hole in without any problems, so easy, even the baron can do it.
