siege question
« on: August 11, 2009, 12:14:10 am »

i noticed that when invaders attack they cant go through locked doors and when there is a siege, the invaders dont path to your fort unless the doors are unlocked.  so wouldnt it be pretty much impossible to lose since i can just keep the doors open until the invaders arrive  on my doorstep then lock the doors and shoot them from some towers until they are all dead?

also is there a way to automatically unforbid the items dropped from corpses cause its really annoying having to claim all of them.

In an ideal world, sure. Unfortunately it's always possible to leave a door unlocked by mistake, and thus have invaders charge through it.

In addition if anything is dumped on the door's square - such as a piece of rock, a skull or even a cat dropping rhinolizard remains there, your door will be stuck open.

In addition shooting by crossbow is not as efficient a method of polishing off invaders as a well engineered deathtrap. It's much better to route the invaders over a pile of weapon traps, stonefall traps and custom drowners and burners than to leave matters in the hands of your crossbow dwarves - not least because if you can shoot them then they can also shoot at you!

If they come that close, and if you don't mind just peeking at them from behind your wee walls, ya dwarf-posin' pansy!

Meh, yes and no.  If you don't count the potential loss of waves of migrants, liaisons, caravans, your Armok-given right to chop trees and loot dead gobbos, and your dignity and self-respect into the equation, sure, you can't lose.

Otherwise, get some military, ya elf-lover!

Ultimately if you want to be safe from sieges, you can be in any number of ways. Locking your doors is one; extensive use of weapon/stonefall/cage traps is another; elaborate deathtraps is a third. Sieges are as hard as you want them to be.

you can go into O)rders, and tell them only military dwarves allowed outside.

For some reason this is bugged for me and when I do it EVERY dwarf stops what they're doing and stands there...

I prefer drawbridges personally. My current fort has it's gate at the mouth of an exposed bottomless pit, making it an ideal moat. Especially when my hammerdwarves like to have fun with orc and goblin invaders.

The first couple of years I like to hole up and let siegers pass me by while my military and smiths train.

Don't give them any reason to be outside. Turn on forbidding of all enemy and friendly death items and mass unforbid once the enemy is routed.
You can also try the orders but it doesn't work nearly as well.

is there a place where i can go to find some guides for stuff like water and magma traps, the wiki isnt very clear and im getting kinda confused.

im also having another problem. if some of my dwarves die during a siege the rest of my dwarves get angry and then they go insane. i mean im not dying from the siege i lose more dwarves from them going insane than from them running outside to die yea.

I put my military in squads and have lots of barracks. Dwarves only go nuts when their friends and loved ones die. If you recruit Dwarves into your military when they emigrate to your fortress then they tend to hang around in their squads - so long as your squads die to the last beard then there ought not to be a problem with morale in your fortress.

Try designating a meeting area indoors, if you don't have one. That might help.

Oh i do, i have 3 meeting areas inside my fort (all Inside) and what happens is, everyone inside, goes to the lowest part of my fort and stands there, even if there isn't a meeting area, and won't take jobs, and won't move. While everyone outside just stops and stands around

That's odd... is it an underground fort? The dorfs treat anything not underground as outside, AFAIK, no matter if it has a roof and walls.

It's mostly underground, with a large aboveground dining area for nobles, the rest (other than the archery/siege range) is all underground.
