Game suggestions for a poorly spec'd laptop
« on: August 10, 2009, 06:48:35 pm »

Hey everyone,
lately I've been having to use my mom's laptop which doesn't have a dedicated gpu and I'm looking for some good pc games (besides df).  I'm open to pretty much any genre and style. What are your favorite games that can be run on a pc with 3gb of DDR2 and a 2.00ghz core 2 duo?

DF :p

I'll just give you some games I like which run on my asus (which means that will likely run thre as well)

Warcraft 3

Patrician 2

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri

Dominions 3

Emperor: battle for dune

Pharaoh

Quake 3 arena

X-Com 1&2 (and three, probably)

Slash'em

Shadow Armada

Trascendence

Imperialism 2

The White Chamber (graphic adventure)

Win Steel Panthers is kind of cool and free, but complicated to play.

Knytt
Knytt Stories
Within A Deep Forest
Art of Theft
Braid
World of Goo
Cave Story
Tripline
Red Alert 2 and the expansion, Yuri's Revenge
Battle for Wesnoth
Grid Wars 2 (A Geometry Wars clone, may be slow at times)
C-evo (A Civ 2 clone)
VisualBoyAdvance
ZSnes

VisualBoyAdvance and ZSnes are not games in themselves, but they should allow you to run ROMs of Gameboy Advance games and old Snes games without difficulty

oh: I was not going to mention it because it's a bit oldie, but it's still good, and more importantly, FREE: Anacreon: the grand-daddy of all 4x games. Has an asimovian style that most other 4x lack, too

Both Anacreon and Trascendence are at Neurohack

That may be because Anacreon is a planet in many of Asimov's books.

Knytt, Knytt Stories, and Within a Deep Forest are roughly similar. They were all made by Nifflas, who has a special fondness in his heart for artistically combining sound and scenery for a very interesting experience. Although the gameplay is almost always limited to getting from point A to point B, its how you do it that proves entertaining, and Within a Deep Forest explores this a different way by making you a bouncing ball. You can see a let's play of Knytt and Knytt Stories here. I believe Knytt Stories also allows you to explore user-made content if you want to.

Art of Theft is a game by Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw. You're a thief. You steal stuff. The gameplay is very entertaining, albeit just as difficult.

Braid is... well, it's Braid. It has its own wikipedia page. Yahtzee reviewed it. Just check those, they will do better justice to the game than I can.

Cave Story can be best summed up as something that looks and controls like a Mario game with guns, but has a story and platforming aspect more in line with the Castlevania series than Mario. More info regarding its origin and how to get it can be found here, at it's Let's Play page in the Something Awful Let's Play archive.

Finally, Tripline is a puzzle game. It has its own particular gimmick and the degree of planning you have to take before you do anything makes it feel like sudoku. The whole game is a series of premade levels. At which point the game ends, I don't know.

true enough, but I mentioned the style because it really does have a whiff of the theme, not just because of the name.

Nice selection. I disagree about B&W, though. Not because it wouldnt work (sure as hell it would), but because IMHO it's a sucky game (then as now)

Cave Story is almost required to be played, it's one of the best indie games of all time.

On my old computer the only game I could ever play on it was "Let's throw the damn piece of crap out the window".

Always a favorite. Sometimes the best fun is throwing random objects at other objects and seeing what happens. Even more fun when one or both are fragile.

EDIT: As to add onto what I stated, I didn't mention the following because I assumed that you'd have moreso trouble with 3d games than even I have. Considering the number of 3D games being mentioned, perhaps I don't quite understand the full meaning of the word chipset. As such, I put forward these titles for consideration.

Grid Wars 2 (A geometry wars clone. May be a bit hard to find and may be simply called Grid Wars. You can tell the difference between one and 2 because in 1 you start off with a dead zone, where you can't hit, around you in a close radius when you can only fire two shots at a time. One more note: it isn't 3d, but it uses a lot of little particles. This can cause a great deal of graphical lag at times, though on the upside? Unintended bullet time.)
Far Cry (At the absolute minimum settings, and even then you may experience a graphical lag at times.)
Half-Life 1.

There's a website that will check whether a game can run on your pc or not. Its http://systemrequirementslab.com.

Integrated Grahpics usually means 'lets steal some memory to run graphics'. My 64mb integrated graphics i had at one point did this
