Good pc games for a low-spec laptop
« on: August 10, 2009, 06:48:00 pm »

Hey everyone,
lately I've been having to use my mom's laptop which doesn't have a dedicated gpu and I'm looking for some good pc games (besides df).  I'm open to pretty much any genre and style. What are your favorite games that can be run on a pc with 3gb of DDR2 and a 2.00ghz core 2 duo?

Blizzard is managed by dark sorcerers, and probably have enough money to bail-out the federal government.

i would happy with a that low spec pc :D however as advise:
if you like strategy:
-EU3, a mediavale, complex but addicting
-civ series less complex but still a big classic
-Total war series more war strategy but quite anoying AI
for some RPG (no real RPG exist in pc but this ones i liked:
- oblivion (need to tale mods it first to be better)
- Fallout series
- Planetscape Torment (quite really rpg feeling)
Good fantasy world simulator:
-DF (and this one is even free ;)
for good FPS/Race games/other:
-no clue i don't play much those ...

You could play pretty much any game released before 2008 with that (assuming a good graphics card). Hell, if you have a good graphics card, you could even play most newer games. Plenty of good ones.. Fallout, Civilization, Age of Wonders, Master of Magic, Counter-Strike, Warcraft 3, just pick.

CPU and RAM alright, but he said he dinnay have a dedicated GPU.

Because if he had one, I'd just say: overclock that fooqueur to hell and back and move into the fridge for gamin sessions.

You can't go wrong with classic titles.

RPG (general): Arcanum, Planescape Torment, Baldur's Gate series, Icewind Dale series.
RPG (action): Diablo series, Sacred, Divine Divinity.
Strategy (squad-based): X-COM series, Jagged Alliance 2.
Strategy (general): Civilization series.
Strategy (real-time): Homeworld series, C&C series.

Get Morrowind, it'll eat up your time like anything (plus the community has all sorts of amazing mods and graphical tweaks that bring the game to the here and now). Diablo II is still awesome compared to other games in its style.

Also, Dawn of War, Battle for Middle Earth, or Age of Mythology. Or Warcraft III and Starcraft. Or Rise of Nations/Legends.

Half Life 2 and Left 4 Dead.

Wait, what's your video card like?

Ha well it has a nice processor and sufficient RAM, but the low-spec-edness is most apparent in my LACK of video card.

Still, it would be useful to know which kind of integrated GPU you have. Big difference between the slowest ATI and the "best" Intel GPU (the Intel one will likely be crap).

Yeah, he's right about that.

I have an Intel 965. That's 256 megs of graphic memory.

ALL OF WHICH ARE WORTHLESS.

But I can still handle games like Dawn of War and stuff, it's stuff with Hardware T&L that I can't.

So you might want to avoid the newer FPS games.
