Magma moat query.
« on: August 10, 2009, 02:50:25 pm »

If I put the caravan wagon route across a magma moat by way of a bridge, will the wagons catch fire from convection?

I've heard of similar things happening, and I don't want it to happen. I need that wood, dammit.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Who said? That doesn't make sense. Perhaps the person who had their stuff ignite was trying to route through a partially drained magma pipe. The ignition would have to do with how magma pipes refill (in "globs" from the top, IIRC). An artificial magma moat with bridges over it should be safe. Until Toady puts heat radiation in, at least.

Heat over time might do it - if they get stalled out.  But I don't think a moving wagon will be vulnerable to such.

If you're really worried, raise the bridge up a z-level via ramps.  More impressive view anyway.

I've heard reference to dorfs standing near magma catching fire, without touching it, but I've never had situations where it could arise, other than, say, dumping magma on a room full of immigrants 8) . Apparently similar things happen on scorching maps, though I've embarked on such maps before and never seen that.

(Or build walls up along the side of where the bridge is, to "screen" the wagons from the heat.  If it's a drawbridge, just make them inaccessible, and the bridge will still raise/lower between them, np.)

Heat from nearby (adjacent tile, 1 level down) magma has been reported to deconstruct wood items like doors and screwpumps.

Magma is only supposed to heat adjacent tiles to "warm" to prevent this and similar problems(ie, magma forge workers spontaneously combusting) - they shouldn't catch fire. I've certainly never had a problem.

I suspect something else caused the incidents thusfar reported, like a fire imp, or magma mist, a magma accident, or an incomplete understanding of magma or pipe behavior.

I might try dumping a log beside my magma channel, just to see if anything happens.

Normally, I'd agree, but the OP's are adamant.  Me, I just don't go there and use stone.

Try building a wooden door or screwpump there - don't use the screwpump to pump magma*, just build it adjacent and wait and see.

(* this is supposed to last longer than one might expect - another I haven't personally experienced.)

The matter of caravans burning after crossing magma moats was because of ramps, as long as you make sure they do not move between z levels while crossing your magma moat they will not catch fire.

This had something to do with the wagons being a 3x3 thing, making a part of it go into the magma as it went up/down the ramp. As long as that won't happen, chances are you're in the clear. It's a diferent problem if you fill your moat with magma without filtering the creatures out, that  just leads to Fun.

Ohhhh, okay.

Damn, that means at least six tiles bigger than I was hoping to make it. Looks like I either need a new entranceway, or Operation Reverse Magma Moat is a bust.

Or I re-site the moat, since I DO have a nice large channel sitting out back.

This had something to do with the wagons being a 3x3 thing, making a part of it go into the magma as it went up/down the ramp...

If that's the same one that rings a bell, the ramps were partially over the magma, and a minimum of tiles away on the same level as the magma - so while the wagon only needed the 1-tile ramp to descend, the wagon was being read as extending thru that wall and into the magma.

  \_|magma
     \__->

Essentially, altho' the ramps worked fine, the game thought the wagon was overlapping into the magma because it was 3 tile long and the ramp+wall were only 2.

If that's what you're worried about, a bridge won't do it.

It was with ramps, but not the way Albedo has it. At least, I don't think. His thing might work still. Anyways,

Code: [Select]
...
... <-- Floor
^^^ <-- Ramps
### <-- Walls
~~~ <-- Magma
~~~

The pulling animals for the wagon would go through the wall and be submerged in the magma for a second before the wagon changed elevation, thus setting everything on fire. Definitely a fun bug.

Oh damn, glad I read this thread then. Was just preparing to fill a setup described with magma for my entrance trap and I am in dire need of wood, so having traders on fire is the last thing I need right now xD
